    AbstractThe adult respiratory distress syndrome, marked by severe, refractory hypoxemia, noncardiogenic pulmonary edema, and stiff, noncompliant lungs, demands quick recognition and intensive care. This article reviews the disease process and current and experimental treatments for it.
