[Continuous arteriovenous hemodialysis in acute renal insufficiency. Review of therapeutical results among 23 patients treated over a period of 2 years].
In critically ill patients with acute renal failure and unstable circulation, dialysis employing conventional haemodialysis may prove technically difficult. If, however, continuous arterio-venous haemofiltration is employed, the haemodynamic problems may be overwon but the method does not always provide effective control of azotaemia. Continuous arterio-venous haemodialysis (KAVHD) is a combination of ultrafiltration and dialysis. ⋯ Fifteen patients (65%) died during the intensive course of treatment but none died from complications of KAVHD or renal failure. Renal function was reestablished in eight patients and seven of these could be discharged alive. KAVHD is an effective and simple method of treating critically ill patients with acute renal failure and unstable circulation.

Review[The laryngeal mask: a new alternative to the facial mask and the endotracheal tube].
The laryngeal mask is a new airway system for use under anaesthesia which assumes a position between the face mask and the endotracheal tube. Employment of this system achieves several of the advantages of intubation while the disadvantages are avoided. The possibilities which this system offers in cases of difficult intubation are particularly interesting, especially in unexpected.

Permanent central venous catheters play an important role in the treatment of patients with malignancies. Two systems are available, Hickman-Broviac Catheters (HB) and Port-a-Cath (PAC), the latter is fully implantable. Since 1982, the systems have been used in the Finsen Institute. ⋯ In general, the complication rate was lower for the PAC method. In addition, the nursing care was reduced to a minimum. The surgical cut-down method is preferable, as catheter implantation is possible even in patients with disorders of the coagulation system.

[A physician-staffed heart ambulance in a rural district. A 1-year trial].
A trial period of one year in which the ambulance service for patients with acute cardiac disease was improved is described. This trial took pace in the County of Vestsjaelland in a mixed urban and rural district with five general practices and with more than fifteen kilometres (9.4 miles) to the county hospital. Two ambulance stations were equipped with defibrillators and the staff were trained in their use. ⋯ The total number of emergency ambulance turn-outs was 1,200, 41 of these were patients with clinical cardiac arrest and 56 to patients with other forms of acute cardiac disease. Sixty-one patients were found to have conditions other than cardiac diseases. It proved possible to provide medical assistance in 79% of the cases.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
