Since 1991, the Danish Junior Doctors' Association has carried out annual investigations among its members in regard to education. In 2001, the questionnaire included a special section about scientific activities. ⋯ The publication rate has declined over the past ten years, which has many reasons. One reason is the increasing number of PhD-degrees and an increase in the impact factor, which means qualitative research improvement. A changed procedure in the postgraduate education is a factor as well. The low recruitment of junior doctors for pregraduate education seems to be a constant problem.

Review[Obsessive-compulsive disorders in children. Subtypes of OCD and their relation to infection with group A streptococci].
The present review describes the theory of a spectrum of obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD). This spectrum includes such disorders as trichotillomania, eating disorders, body dysmorphic disorder, and possibly pervasive developmental disorders. OCD with an onset in childhood is presented as a specific subtype, with more boys affected and frequently co-morbid with tics and Tourette's syndrome. ⋯ This subtype of OCD is, still on a speculative basis, connected to infections with beta-haemolytic streptococci. The obsessive-compulsive symptoms are characterised by a sudden onset, "sawtoothed" course with relapses and remissions, and are associated with neurological abnormalities. There are still no clinical consequences in terms of penicillin treatment of this PANDAS subtype of OCD.

Over the last decades, numerous studies of the efficacy of psychotherapy on major depression have been carried out. They provide evidence of the effectiveness of cognitive therapy and interpersonal therapy in the treatment of mild to moderate depression. ⋯ Maintenance interpersonal therapy may contribute to prevent new episodes in recurrently depressive patients, where promising studies also indicate that cognitive therapy has a preventive effect on future depressions. This calls for larger and better controlled studies.

Case Reports[Three cases of thrombosis of the internal jugular vein].
We describe three cases of ultrasonographically diagnosed thrombosis of the internal jugular vein encountered in an oncological department. Vague symptoms often delay the diagnosis, but it should be considered when patients present with subacute unilateral oedema of the neck, root of neck, or periclavicular region. At present, treatment is heparin initially and coumarins for a minimum of three months.

Review[STI571 (Glivec)--a new drug for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia].
Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) is characterised by the occurrence of the Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome (9/22 translocation) and the formation of a fusion protein--the BCR-ABL transcript with constitutive activation of the BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase and consequent changes in the intracellular signal transduction, which is responsible for the deregulated myeloid cell proliferation. STI571 (signal transduction inhibition number 571) is a potent and selective inhibitor of the BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase. ⋯ Side effects are primarily nausea, vomiting, various rashes, oedema, most often in the periorbital region, and musculoskeletal symptoms, including muscle cramps. Perspectives for treatment with STI571 are described, as are combinations with alpha-interferon and other cytostatics with a synergistic profile.
