Comparison of sensitivity of bacteria isolated in odontogenic infections to ceftriaxone and amoxicillin-clavulanate.
Odontogenic infections is a cause of mortality and morbidity in maxillofacial patients. This is largely due to resistance of organisms to antibiotics prescribed. ⋯ Out of a total 55 samples taken for bacteriology, 42 (76.4%) yielded positive culture for bacteria. A total number of 21 bacteria species were identified from the positive cultures. Overall, 52% of isolated organisms were sensitive to amoxicillin-clavulanate, 70% were sensitive to Ceftriaxone while 24% were resistant to both antibiotics (Table 3). Ceftriaxone was statistically significantly more potent in inhibiting bacteria growth than amoxicillin-clavulanate (P =0.009). [Table: see text].

Association between the UBE2Z rs46522 and TCF7L2 rs7903146 polymorphisms with type 2 diabetes in south western Iran.
Transcription factor 7-like 2 Protein (TCF7L2) has a strong role in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Association between rs7903146 and T2D risk reported in some of populations. Also many loci such as UBE2Z rs46522 are affecting by TCF7L2 transcription factor have been found associated with T2D. The present study aimed to evaluate association of the SNPs with risk of T2D among our population. ⋯ Our study indicates no association of T2D in south western Iran with the rs7903146 and rs46522 variants.

Evaluation of clinical, diagnostic and treatment aspects in hydatid disease: analysis of an 8-year experience.
Echinococcosis is still a common health problem. The aim of this study was to discuss our 8-year data in terms of diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of cystic Echinococcosis. ⋯ Even though considerable progress has been made, uncertainties remain in the diagnosis and treatment of Echinococcosis. Hence, standardized diagnostic and treatment procedures should be established with well-designed studies.

Impact of the community healthcare plan and the free maternity services programme on maternal and child healthcare utilisation in rural Kenya: a dairy farmer population-based study.
Access to and utilisation of quality maternal and child healthcare services is generally recognized as the best way to reduce maternal and child mortality. ⋯ The study was funded by the Health Insurance Fund (http://www.hifund.org/), through a grant from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Oxidant and antioxidant parameters in people who fast during Ramadan, and those who do not.
Objectives: The main aim of this study was to compare, by a new automated colorimetric method, oxidant and anti-oxidant status of those who fast during Ramadan and those who do not. For this purpose, total oxidant status (TOS), total anti-oxidant capacity (TAC) levels and oxidative stress index (OSI) were analysed. By doing this, we hope to examine whether fasting has any beneficial effect on human health. ⋯ The TAC levels of the fasting group (1.29±0,19) was quite higher than the non-fasting group (1,09±0,16) [EIC2][ICD3] [ICD4](p< 0.001). Similarly, in the fasting group TOS level and the OSI (respectively 12,77±2,23 and 1,01±0,25) was quite lower [EIC5][ICD6][ICD7] than in the non-fasting group (respectively 14,15±2,04 and 1,33±0,30), (p<=0.019 and p<0.001, respectively). These findings show that the TOS level of non-fasting group was high. This oxidative stress might cause various illnesses. Therefore, fasting could play a significant part in health-protection by increasing total anti-oxidant capacity.
