Prevalence of echocardiographic left atrial enlargement among hypertensive Nigerian subjects.
Left atrial enlargement (LAE) predispose to arrhythmias, atrial thrombogenesis and cardioembolic stroke. Whether LAE constitute a major risk among African hypertensive subjects is not well described. This study was aimed to describe the epidemiologic pattern of LAE among hypertensive subjects and determine their correlates. ⋯ LAE is common among Nigerian hypertensive subjects. Age, waist circumference, left ventricular wall dimension and mass index are the important correlates of LAE in hypertensive Nigerians.

Relationship of serum lipid profiles in preeclampsia and normal pregnancy, Bangladesh.
The purpose of this present study to investigate the lipid profile levels and basal body mass index in preeclampsia and normal pregnancy in Bangladeshi women. ⋯ Abnormal lipid profile and increased body mass index is contributed to the development of preeclampsia. The frequent antenatal monitoring of lipid profiles provides the status which helps to require management and reduces the preeclampsia which enhances maternal and fetal wellbeing and fetal outcome.

Characteristics, risk factors and outcomes of community-acquired acute kidney injury in the elderly: a prospective tertiary hospital study, Egypt.
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is a public health problem. Elderly present a greater predisposition to the development of AKI, either due to kidney senility, or due to high prevalence of comorbidities and polypharmacy. Considering the scarcity of studies on AKI in the elderly particularly in developing countries, this study emphasizes on the pattern and outcome of AKI in the Egyptian elderly. ⋯ In our locality; the elderly is highly vulnerable to AKI. Pre-renal causes principally dehydration represent the main triggers of AKI. Sepsis and hypertension contribute to mortality in this population. Preventive strategies are crucial not only in the hospital but also at home.

Regulation of male sex hormones strongly heightens copulation behavior indices in rat's model administered Cocos nucifera husks extract.
Cocos nucifera (Coconut, Arecaceae family) is consumed as dietary fruit but little is known of it as sex enhancer. ⋯ C. nucifera husks extract improves sexuality indices by regulating male sex hormones in male Wistar rats.

Gender-based violence during COVID-19 lockdown: case study of a community in Lagos, Nigeria.
Gender-based violence (GBV) has been identified to be one of the ripple effects of the global pandemic. In countries like Nigeria, the situation is hypothesized to be worse because of widespread poverty and gender inequalities. ⋯ The fact that over 1 out of every 2 females was subjected to at least one form of GBV within the short timeframe shows how unsafe girls and women in low-income communities are. This calls for proactive community-level interventions to curb the GBV menace.
