Multicenter StudyRisk factors for bleeding, including platelet count threshold, in newly diagnosed immune thrombocytopenia adults.
Essentials Risk factors of bleeding in adult immune thrombocytopenia are not known. This multicenter study assessed risk factors of bleeding at immune thrombocytopenia onset. Platelet count thresholds associated with bleeding were < 20 × 109 L-1 and < 10 × 109 L-1. Exposure to anticoagulants was a major risk factor of severe bleeding.

Meta AnalysisReduced-dose direct oral anticoagulants in the extended treatment of venous thromboembolism: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Essentials In venous thromboembolism (VTE), benefits of extended treatment are balanced by bleeding risks. This is a meta-analysis of reduced-dose direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in extended treatment. Reduced-dose DOACs are as effective as full anticoagulation with bleeding risks similar to placebo. Reduced-dose DOACs are an attractive option for patients in the extended phase of VTE treatment.

Comparative StudyRivaroxaban for thromboprophylaxis among patients recently hospitalized for acute infectious diseases: a subgroup analysis of the MAGELLAN study.
Essentials Net benefit of venous thromboprophylaxis (VTE) in patients hospitalized for infections is unknown. MAGELLAN trial subgroup analysis was performed for patients hospitalized for acute infectious diseases. At day 35, prolonged rivaroxaban prophylaxis reduced VTE compared to enoxaparin (4.2% vs. 6.6%). Rivaroxaban prophylaxis reduced VTE in patients hospitalized for active lung infections.

Cellular immune responses to platelet factor 4 and heparin complexes in patients with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia.
Essentials The immunogenesis of Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is not well understood. Immunization to platelet factor 4 (PF4)-heparin occurs early in life, before any heparin exposure. PF4 and PF4-heparin complexes induce the proliferation of CD14+ cells. Reduced levels of regulatory cytokines contribute to immune dysregulation in HIT.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyPrediction of short-term prognosis in elderly patients with acute pulmonary embolism: validation of the RIETE score.
Essentials The RIETE score was derived to predict 10-day adverse outcomes in acute pulmonary embolism (PE). We externally validated the RIETE score in a prospective cohort of patients with PE. The RIETE score classified fewer patients as low-risk than currently recommended scores. The RIETE score was not superior to other scores in predicting 10-day adverse outcomes.
