Refrigerated platelets stored in whole blood up to 5 days adhere to thrombi formed during hemorrhagic hypotension in rats.
Essentials In vivo function of platelets stored at various conditions was studied in normo- and hypotension. Refrigerated platelets stored up to 5 days performed as well as those stored at room temperature. Platelet adhesion and thrombus formation were higher in ruptured vessels of hemorrhaged animals. In vivo data suggest that refrigerated platelets are hemostatically effective during hypotension.

Observational StudyThe long-term recurrence risk of patients with unprovoked venous thromboembolism: an observational cohort study.
Essentials Long-term recurrence risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is uncertain. We performed a prospective cohort study of 839 patients with first unprovoked VTE. VTE recurrence risk is high, particularly in men with proximal thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. Sex and VTE site determine the recurrence risk and should be considered for patient counseling.

Lung function, respiratory symptoms and venous thromboembolism risk: the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study.
Essentials The association of lung function with venous thromboembolism (VTE) is unclear. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patterns were associated with a higher risk of VTE. Symptoms were also associated with a higher risk of VTE, but a restrictive pattern was not. COPD may increase the risk of VTE and respiratory symptoms may be a novel risk marker for VTE.

Inhibition of major integrin αV β3 reduces Staphylococcus aureus attachment to sheared human endothelial cells.
Essentials Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) binds and impairs function of vascular endothelial cells (EC). We investigated the molecular signals triggered by S. aureus adhesion to EC. Inhibition of the EC integrin αVβ3 reduces S. aureus binding and rescues EC function. αVβ3 blockade represents an attractive target to treat S. aureus bloodborne infections.

Multicenter Study Comparative Study Observational StudyPoor comparability of coagulation screening test with specific measurement in patients receiving direct oral anticoagulants: results from a multicenter/multiplatform study.
Essentials Prothrombin and partial thromboplastin time (PT/PTT) measure direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). PT, PTT and specific tests for DOACs were performed on patients treated for atrial fibrillation. Normal PT/PTT don't exclude DOAC activity and their prolongation doesn't confirm DOAC action. The use of PT or PTT to evaluate DOAC activity could cause dangerous misinterpretations.
