The purpose of this study is to reveal the participation of different regulatory cytokines within the process of pseudoexfoliation (PEX). ⋯ Based on our findings local chronic inflammation in the eye is accompanied by the secretion of different profibrotic cytokines (TGF-β, PDGF, EGF, IGF, IL-8) without angiogenesis due to effects of ITAC.

Meta Analysis
Use of proton pump inhibitors and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Worldwide, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly used for the treatment of peptic ulcer and gastro-esophageal reflux disease. Recently, concern has arisen over the potential association between PPIs and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The aim of the current study was to evaluate the influence of PPI use on the risk of HCC, through a systematic review and meta-analysis. ⋯ The current meta-analysis has shown that PPI use does not significantly increase the risk of HCC after adjusting for confounding factors. However, further studies are warranted to verify the association between PPIs and HCC in special populations, such as viral or alcoholic liver diseases.

Self-expandable metal stents (SEMS) are a widely accepted biliary endoprosthesis for patients with unresectable malignant biliary obstruction. Here, we identified predictors for the occlusion of SEMS in unresectable pancreatic cancer patients with biliary tract obstruction. ⋯ In total, 120 patients who received PC-SEMS for unresectable pancreatic cancer were identified. The rate of PC-SEMS occlusion was 37%. The median time to occlusion of PC-SEMS was 359 days. The major causes of occlusion included biliary sludge (61%) and tumor ingrowth (30%). Cox multivariate regression analysis revealed that inadequate alkaline phosphatase/gamma-glutamyl transferase decline (defined by a decrease of <50% within 2 wk after PC-SEMS placement) was the only independent predictor of stent occlusion (hazard ratio, 2.86; 95% CI, 1.28-6.25; p = 0.01) CONCLUSION:: Inadequate alkaline phosphatase/gamma-glutamyl transferase decline is a predictor of occlusion of first-time PC-SEMS placement in unresectable pancreatic cancer patients with biliary tract obstruction.

Anemia is the major complication resulting from chronic kidney disease (CKD) and also a risk factor for cardiovascular events and a poor quality of life (QoL). Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the major cause of CKD. Initially, insulin resistance has been reported to increase erythropoiesis, but it might be a minor issue. ⋯ Recently, the antidiabetic agent, sodium glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i), has been reported to exhibit the renal benefits due to the tubulo-glomerular feedback in addition to sugar control. It may also be due to less renal ischemic through higher EPO levels, followed by higher Hb levels. More studies are needed to clarify the link between the renal benefit of SGLT2i and EPO production.
