Pregnant and lactating women are vulnerable to iodine deficiency. This study was conducted to evaluate the iodine nutritional status of lactating women in northern Taiwan. ⋯ The results suggest that the iodine status in lactating women in northern Taiwan is adequate. However, iodine deficiency may continue to be present in certain subgroups, such as women of younger age and those who do not take multivitamins.

Few prognostic factors have been proposed for patients with locally advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC). This study aimed to investigate the possible predictive factors for disease-free survival (DFS) after curative surgery for RCC stage T3 or higher. ⋯ In patients with locally advanced RCC, Fuhrman grade was associated with worse DFS after curative surgery. Urologists should closely monitor patients with high Fuhrman grades.

The purpose of our study is to identify novel preeclampsia (PE)-related methylation genes and uncover the molecular mechanism of PE. ⋯ Our study should be helpful for the development of potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets for PE.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease that is characterized by impaired glucose metabolism and insulin resistance. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the pattern of leptin receptor gene polymorphism Gln223Arg in T2DM and to identify its association with the serum leptin and insulin levels as well as with insulin resistance in diabetes. ⋯ Leptin receptor gene polymorphism affected glucose metabolism by altering insulin resistance and pancreatic beta cells. Thus, single-nucleotide polymorphism of LEPR may affect the pathogenesis of T2DM.

Sub-total/total gastrectomy with lymph node dissection (LND) remains an effective therapeutic strategy for resectable gastric adenocarcinomas (GACs). Despite the prognostic significance of positive lymph nodes (PLNs) defined in N-status, few have appraised the impacts of negative lymph nodes (NLNs) and the percentage of NLN (=number of NLNs/number of total lymph nodes [TLNs], %), as well as the extent of TLNs to be dissected in GACs. ⋯ The percentage of NLN could predict the prognosis of GAC patients properly. However, an accurate percentage of NLN needs a minimal requirement of TLNs > 15 to detect an adequate number of PLNs and sufficient number of NLNs.
