Esophageal varices (EV) is common and is a poor prognostic factor for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the outcomes between cirrhotic and noncirrhotic HCC patients with EV is not well studied. The present study aimed to investigate the clinical manifestations and prognoses of HCC patients after surgical resection stratified by the cirrhosis status. ⋯ Compared with patients without cirrhosis, cirrhotic patients with HCC and EV are vulnerable to posthepatectomy decompensation. However, cirrhosis is not a poor prognostic factor of overall survival and recurrence for HCC patients after surgical resection.

Plain abdominal radiography including supine and erect abdominal radiographs (SAR and EAR) is a frequently used image modality for preliminary evaluation of acute abdomen. We aimed to explore which one of the SAR or EAR has a higher diagnostic value in overall diagnosis of acute abdomen, including their respective advantages over each other for the various underlying diseases. ⋯ There is no significant difference between SAR and EAR in evaluation of overall acute abdomen. However, EARs has a diagnostic advantage over SAR for evaluation of suspected bowel obstruction.

Partial-thickness rotator cuff tears (PTRCTs) is not uncommon, and various nonsurgical injection therapy for PTRCTs emerged. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and hyaluronic acid (HA) injection were proposed for treating PTRCTs; however, the relation of dose among injectates was still lacking. ⋯ Ultrasound-guided single PRP injection exhibited comparable benefit to three doses of HA injection in patients with PTRCTs short-termly, with an extended effect regarding passive shoulder abduction ROM and CMSS.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is a rare disease, which prognostic factors were difficult to evaluate. Inflammation markers, like neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), were used as prognosticators for various cancers. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of pretreatment NLR and PLR on LAMN. ⋯ Both NLR-H and PLR-H had more M1 stage of diseases, but they were not correlated to OS nor RFS. PLR-H group had higher rate of presence PMP. Nevertheless, patients with LAMN and cellular PMP (M1b stage) had a higher rate of recurrence, and other factors showed no statistical difference in OS nor RFS.

The cellular process responsible for the degradation of cytosolic proteins and subcellular organelles in lysosomes was termed "autophagy." This process occurs at a basal level in most tissues as part of tissue homeostasis that redounds to the regular turnover of components inside cytoplasm. The breakthrough in the autophagy field is the identification of key players in the autophagy pathway, compounded under the name "autophagy-related genes" (ATG) encoding for autophagy effector proteins. Generally, the function of autophagy can be classified into two divisions: intracellular clearance of defective macromolecules and organelles and generation of degradation products. ⋯ Autophagy has been viewed as a remarkable mechanism for maintaining homeostasis, ensuring the adequate function and survival of long-lived stem cells. In addition, authophagy also plays a remarkable role in protecting stem cells against cellular stress when the stem cell regenerative capacity is harmed in aging and cellular degeneration. Understanding the under-explored mechanisms of MSC actions and expanding the spectrum of their clinical applications may improve the utility of the MSC-based therapeutic approach in the future.
