Optimal technique of three-dimensional MRI of the lumbar nerve root and its radicular vein in normal and lumbar disc herniation patients.
Although three-dimensional MRI (3D-MRI) of short T1 inversion recovery turbo spin-echo (STIR TSE) has showed superior to two-dimensional MRI (2D-MRI) in showing the spinal cord and lumbar nerve roots, it remains difficult in demonstrating radicular vein at present. We have found that short T1 inversion recovery long time echo (STIR LONG TE) was better in showing radicular vein. To further study the methods and character of the 3D-MRI of lumbar nerve root, ganglions and radicular vein in normal and lumbar disc herniation (LDH) adults, in the present study, we evaluated two 3D-MRI techniques, STIR TSE and STIR LONG TE for demonstrating lumbar nerve roots and especial radicular vein in normal and LDH adults. ⋯ The 3D-MRI of STIR LONG TE is superior to STIR TSE for not only detecting the lumbar nerve root, ganglion and especial radicular vein in normal adults, but also displaying their patho-injuries degree in LDH patients.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of intensive blood glucose control on quality of life in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes in Anhui Province.
Intensive blood glucose control is proven to be associated with the diabetic microvascular and macrovascular complications, which could affect quality of life (QOL). This study was performed to determine the effects of intensive glucose control therapy on QOL of elderly patients with type 2 diabetes in Anhui Province. ⋯ Anxiety is common in elderly diabetic patients and they experienced frequent hypoglycemic episodes. Diabetic vascular complications significantly affect QOL of the patients. Intensive glucose control has no significant effect on QOL of the diabetic patients. Female, older age, long disease course, less education and high BMI are all factors caused reduced QOL and patients with these factors should be given more psychological support. Frequent mild hypoglycemic episodes do not cause impaired function of the central nervous system.

Breast magnetic resonance imaging in patients with occult breast carcinoma: evaluation on feasibility and correlation with histopathological findings.
As an uncommon presentation, occult primary breast cancer remains a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge in clinical practice. This study aimed to retrospectively assess the feasibility of breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with malignant axillary lymphadenopathy and unknown primary malignancy, and correlation with histopathological characteristics. ⋯ Mass lesions with small size and lesions with ductal or segment enhancement are common MRI features in patients with occult breast cancer. The dominant types of primary tumors are invasive ductal carcinoma with moderate histopathological grade. The rate of triple-negative breast carcinoma may be higher in occult breast cancer.

Characterization of human metapneumovirus from pediatric patients with acute respiratory infections in a 4-year period in Beijing, China.
Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) was discovered by scientists in the Netherlands as a novel respiratory virus in 2001 and had been found in children with acute respiratory tract infections (ARTI) in China. The objective of this study was to determine the importance of hMPV infection in children in Beijing and the genotypes of the circulating virus by the surveillance during a four-consecutive-year period. ⋯ hMPV was an important pathogen for ARTI in pediatric patients, especially those under five years old. Both genotypes A and B circulated simultaneously in Beijing.

Review Meta AnalysisHeterosexual risk of HIV infection in China: systematic review and meta-analysis.
Heterosexual sex has become the dominant transmission route in China. Recently studies reported high heterogeneity in heterosexual transmission risk in resource-limited countries. The aim of this study was to summarize the risk of HIV transmission among Chinese serodiscordant couples. ⋯ Transmission estimates in China were lower than other developing countries, but higher than developed countries. Research that better defines HIV secondary transmission rates and the associated behavioral, treatment adherence, and health-related risk factors among heterosexual serodiscordant couples in China is needed.
