Molecular mechanism of indirubin-3'-monoxime and Matrine in the reversal of paclitaxel resistance in NCI-H520/TAX25 cell line.
Multidrug resistance (MDR) is a main reason for paclitaxel (TAX) treatment failure. Indirubin-3'-monoxime (IRO) and Matrine are traditional Chinese medicines, which may reverse the resistance of tumor cells to some chemotherapy drugs, but the relationship between paclitaxel resistance and Matrine is still unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the potential molecular mechanism of IRO and Matrine in reversal of TAX resistance. ⋯ The decrease in both mRNA expression and protein level of survivin, Oct-4, and Sox-2 might be the molecular mechanism, by which IRO and Matrine mediate the reversal of TAX resistance.

Meta AnalysisTranscatheter aortic valve implantation versus surgical aortic valve replacement for severe aortic stenosis: a meta analysis.
Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has emerged as the treatment choice for non-operable patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis (AS) and may be a good alternative to surgery for those at very high or prohibitive surgical risk. We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the comparative benefits of TAVI versus surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) in patients with severe AS. ⋯ In patients with severe symptomatic AS, TAVI and SAVR did not differ with respect to short- and mid-term survival, but the incidence of permanent pacemaker implantation and post-procedural aortic regurgitation remain relatively high after TAVI.

Meta AnalysisRole of adjuvant chemoradiotherapy in treatment of resectable esophageal carcinoma: a meta-analysis.
The effectiveness and influence of surgery followed by adjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT) on the survival of patients with resectable esophageal carcinoma are still under debate. The outcomes of clinical trials have not been consistent. This study aimed to perform a meta-analysis of eligible published clinical trials to compare CRT with surgery without adjuvant chemoradiotherapy (non-CRT) for resectable esophageal carcinoma. ⋯ It was found that patients with resectable esophageal carcinoma could gain a survival benefit from CRT. However, CRT was associated with a high incidence of related complications.

Perinatal risk factors and neonatal complications in discordant twins admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit.
Many studies have shown a relationship between birth weight discordance and adverse perinatal outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the perinatal risk factors and neonatal complications of discordant twins who are admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. ⋯ Use of assisted reproductive techniques, pregnancy-induced hypertension, and unequal placental sharing are perinatal risk factors of discordant twins who are admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. These infants are also much more likely to suffer from various neonatal complications, especially respiratory and central nervous system diseases. It is important to prevent the occurrence of discordant twins by decreasing these risk factors and timely treatment should be given to discordant twins.

Screening for Parkinson syndrome in a Chinese rural population: re-examination of a historic questionnaire.
Standardized screening tools for Parkinson syndrome have not been developed for non-western populations. This study aimed to validate the Copiah County questionnaire (CCQ) as a screening instrument in a Chinese rural population. ⋯ CCQ appeared to have satisfactory statistical parameters to serve as a screening instrument for Parkinson syndrome in this rural Chinese population. Further studies may prove the utility of this short questionnaire in Parkinson syndrome screening among Chinese populations including those residing in rural areas.
