BRCA2 promoter polymorphism is associated with breast cancer prognosis in Chinese women.
Breast cancer 2 (BRCA2) is an important breast cancer-susceptibility gene. Promoter polymorphisms in BRCA2 may affect its transcription and be associated with cancer prognosis. ⋯ The results of this study suggest that homozygosity for the BRCA2 T(-1144) allele is associated with a longer DFI in Chinese women with breast cancer. Further functional studies are warranted to clarify this relationship.

15-deoxy-Δ¹²,¹⁴-prostaglandin J₂ ameliorates endotoxin-induced acute lung injury in rats.
A proinflammatory milieu emerging in the lung due to neutrophil accumulation and activation is a key in the pathogenesis of acute lung injury (ALI). 15-deoxy-Δ(12, 14)-prostaglandin J2 (15d-PGJ2), one of the terminal products of the cyclooxygenase-2 pathway, is known to be the endogenous ligand of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPAR-γ) with multiple physiological properties. Growing evidence indicates that 15d-PGJ2 has anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, cytoprotective and pro-resolving effects. We investigated whether 15d-PGJ2 has a protective effect against endotoxin-induced acute lung injury in rats. ⋯ 15d-PGJ2 protects against endotoxin-induced acute lung injury, most likely through the reduction of proinflammatory protein levels during endotoxemia subsequent to the inhibition of NF-κB activation.

Negative association of donor age with CD34⁺ cell dose in mixture allografts of G-CSF-primed bone marrow and G-CSF-mobilized peripheral blood harvests.
The effects of donor characteristics on CD34(+) cell dose remain controversial. Recently, we developed a novel haploidentical transplant protocol, in which mixture allografts of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-primed bone marrow (G-BM) and G-CSF-mobilized peripheral blood (G-PB) were used. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of donor characteristics on CD34(+) cell dose in mixture allografts of G-BM and G-PB. ⋯ Donor age is the only factor among the four parameters, including age, gender, weight, and BMI, that influence CD34(+) cell dose in mixture allografts of G-BM and G-PB, and younger donors should be chosen to obtain sufficient CD34(+) cells for transplantation.

A comparative study of calcium sulfate artificial bone graft versus allograft in the reconstruction of bone defect after tumor curettage.
Cavity reconstruction after benign bone tumor removal is varied and controversial. Allograft is widely used but is associated with complications. New bone substitutes, such as calcium sulfate artificial bone, have been introduced for bone tumor operation. However, the bone healing response of artificial bone has not been compared with allograft bone. We therefore compared calcium sulfate grafts (study group) with bone allografts (control group) for the treatment of benign bone tumors. ⋯ The calcium sulfate bone substitute showed a satisfactory healing outcome and safety profile in reconstruction of bone defects after benign bone tumor curettage, especially in smaller cavities.

Proximal gastric cancer: lymph node metastatic patterns according to different T stages dictate surgical approach.
As a common form of gastric cancer migration, lymph node metastasis largely affects the surgical treatment and prognosis of gastric cancer. Surgery is the fundamental curative option for gastric cancer that varies depending on different stages. The study aimed to compare the clinicopathological characteristics and lymph node metastatic patterns in patients of proximal gastric cancer with different T stages and investigate a reasonable radical gastrectomy approach in terms of the range of lymphadenectomy for proximal gastric cancer. ⋯ Different T stages in proximal gastric cancer showed different patterns and characteristics of lymph node metastasis. D2 lymphadenectomy in patients with early gastric cancer had little survival benefit because metastasis to level 2 nodes was rare. Therefore the range of the lymph node dissection in radical gastrectomy for early gastric cancer was considered reasonable. Moreover, to meet the requirements of the lymph node dissection, total gastrectomy plus D2 lymphadenectomy or more are supposed to be applied for the advanced proximal gastric cancer patients. Precise T staging largely determines the range of gastrectomy and lymphadenectomy.
