Prostasin gene polymorphism at rs12597511 is associated with severe preeclampsia in Chinese Han women.
Preeclampsia, characterized by hypertension and proteinuria, is a multifactorial disease associated with shallow invasion of trophoblast cells and inadequate spiral artery remodeling. Trophoblast and tumor cells have similar invasion mechanism. Prostasin is closely related to tumor development, invasion and metastasis and influences blood pressure through activating epithelial sodium channel. The effect of prostasin on the pathogenesis of preeclampsia remains unclear. This study investigated the association of prostasin gene at rs12597511 with severe preeclampsia. ⋯ The higher frequency of C allele of prostasin gene at rs12597511 is associated with severe preeclampsia.

Prevalence of stroke and metabolic disorders in the middle-aged and elderly Chinese with type 2 diabetes.
Stroke is now the most prevalent and debilitating disease affecting diabetic population in China. The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of stroke and metabolic disorders in the middle-aged and elderly Chinese with type 2 diabetes. ⋯ The prevalence of stroke was higher in middle-aged and elderly Chinese with type 2 diabetes than that in the general population. With the aggregation of risk factors, the prevalence of stroke increased.

Correlation between the coverage percentage of prosthesis and postoperative hidden blood loss in primary total knee arthroplasty.
The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between prosthesis coverage and postoperative hidden blood loss (HBL) in primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA). ⋯ HBL after TKA correlates with degree of prosthetic coverage. To some extent, the size of the surfaces exposed by osteotomy determines the amount of HBL. Choice of the appropriate prosthesis can significantly reduce postoperative HBL. Designing individualized prostheses would be a worthwhile development in joint replacement surgery.

Antimicrobial susceptibility of Gram-negative bacteria causing intra-abdominal infections in China: SMART China 2011.
The Study for Monitoring Antimicrobial Resistance Trends program monitors the activity of antibiotics against aerobic and facultative Gram-negative bacilli (GNBs) from intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) in patients worldwide. ⋯ Enterobacteriaceae were the major pathogens causing IAIs, and the most active agents against the study isolates (including those producing ESBLs) were ertapenem, imipenem, and amikacin. Including the carbapenems, most agents exhibited reduced susceptibility against ESBL-positive and multidrug-resistant isolates.

Association between high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide in a community based population.
N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) are excellent biomarkers for detecting heart failure and subclinical myocardial injury. However, it remains unclear whether subclinical myocardial injury is associated with NT-proBNP elevation in a community based population. ⋯ In this community based population, NT-proBNP elevation was common. In addition to female gender and older age, subclinical myocardial injury indicated by the hs-cTnT level was another important factor in NT-proBNP elevation.
