Initial study of magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging in brain white matter of early AIDS patients.
HIV is a neurotropic virus which can cause brain white matter demyelination, gliosis, and other pathological changes that appear as HIV encephalitis or AIDS dementia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the change of the diffused condition of water molecules in brain white matter in early acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients using MR diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). ⋯ The diffused changes of water molecules in brain white matter in AIDS patients are related to brain white matter regions. DTI examination can detect the brain white matter lesions early in AIDS patients.

Cyclooxygenase 2 1195G > A polymorphism is associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Japanese and Chinese patients.
Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is overexpressed during airway inflammation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the COX-2 promoter might contribute to differential COX-2 expression and subsequent interindividual variability in susceptibility to COPD. We investigated the association between COX-2 (-765G > C, -1195G > A) polymorphisms and COPD susceptibility in Japanese and Chinese patients. ⋯ The COX-2 -1195AA genotype is associated with increased risk for COPD in both Japanese and Chinese individuals. Although COX-2 -765G > C polymorphism was not associated with COPD in either ethnic group, the -765C allele frequency was higher in Chinese than Japanese and haplotype -765G-1195A may confer susceptibility to COPD in Chinese.

In-hospital medical complications associated with patient dependency after acute ischemic stroke: data from the China National Stroke Registry.
The mortality of stroke patients is strongly affected by medical complications. However, there are limited data investigating the effect of in-hospital medical complications on the dependency of stroke patients worldwide. We prospectively and systematically investigated the effect of medical complications on dependency of patients at 3, 6 and 12 months after stroke using the China National Stroke Registry (CNSR). ⋯ The results demonstrated that the short-term and long-term dependency of acute ischemic stroke patients is significantly associated with in-hospital medical complications in China.

Relationship between linguistic functions and cognitive functions in a clinical study of Chinese patients with post-stroke aphasia.
There has been a long debate among scholars surrounding the relationship between language and cognition. The worldwide study of aphasia is actively exploring the function of language from cognitive point of view. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between linguistic functions and cognitive functions in a clinical study of Chinese patients with post-stroke aphasia. ⋯ There exists a close relationship between linguistic functions and cognitive orientation, spatial perception, visual perception, and thinking operation in a clinical study of Chinese patients with post-stroke aphasia.
