Review Case ReportsDaptomycin-induced acute eosinophilic pneumonia: analysis of the current data and illustrative case reports.
Acute eosinophilic pneumonia (AEP) is a rare but important complication of daptomycin therapy. We describe 2 cases of daptomycin-associated AEP, compile available data from another 22 published cases, and propose a revised set of diagnostic criteria.

ReviewEarly lumbar puncture in adult bacterial meningitis--rationale for revised guidelines.
Current international guidelines recommend cerebral computerized tomography (CT) before lumbar puncture (LP) in many adults with suspected acute bacterial meningitis (ABM), due to concern about LP-induced cerebral herniation. Despite guideline emphasis on early treatment based on symptoms, performing CT prior to LP implies a risk of delayed ABM treatment, which may be associated with a fatal outcome. ⋯ The inappropriate use of the diagnostic treatment sequence of brain CT scan, followed by LP, followed by antibiotics and corticosteroids should be avoided in adults with suspected ABM by omitting needless contraindications for LP, thus eliminating an unnecessary fear of immediate LP. Revised Swedish guidelines regarding early LP are presented, and the background documentation and reasons for omitting impaired consciousness, new onset seizures, and immunocompromised state as contraindications to LP are discussed.

ReviewInfection prevention in the intensive care unit: review of the recent literature on the management of invasive devices.
Over the last 5 y, clinical trials investigating products, procedures, and treatments aimed at preventing infections in the intensive care unit have been described. The findings of these studies appear to confirm the effectiveness of certain preventive procedures. ⋯ Medicated catheters and chlorhexidine-based dressings have been found useful for catheter-related bloodstream infections, and medical catheters have also been shown to be efficacious against urinary tract infections. All these procedures can be incorporated into departmental protocols for the prevention of nosocomial infections in the intensive care unit.

Review Case ReportsNosocomial post-traumatic cutaneous mucormycosis: a systematic review.
Mucormycosis is a rare, rapidly fatal opportunistic invasive fungal infection occurring in immunocompromised patients. Primary cutaneous mucormycosis usually follows direct inoculation of fungal spores at the site of damaged or traumatized skin. We report a case of fatal nosocomial post-traumatic cutaneous mucormycosis in a diabetic patient and we performed a systematic review of reported cases of nosocomial post-traumatic cutaneous mucormycosis to describe their demographic profile, predisposing factors, treatment and outcome.

Review Case ReportsPrimary sternal osteomyelitis in a healthy child due to community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and literature review.
Primary sternal osteomyelitis is a rare condition. Most of the recent cases have been reported in intravenous drug abusers. ⋯ While bacteriological culture results are pending, antibiotic therapy with Staphylococcus aureus coverage should be initiated empirically and the possibility of community-acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus must be borne in mind. In this report we also review the literature of paediatric primary sternal osteomyelitis.
