Case ReportsAn intraatrial thrombus and pulmonary thromboembolism as a late complication of percutaneous vertebroplasty.
Although percutaneous vertebroplasty is a simple and generally safe method for the management of vertebral compression fractures, cement leakage outside the vertebral body is a potential source of serious complications. We report a patient who presented with dyspnea and edema five years after percutaneous vertebroplasty and underwent open-heart surgery. This case demonstrates an intraatrial thrombus and pulmonary thromboembolism caused by venous leakage of polymethylmethacrylate as a late complication of the procedure.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe effect of epidural anesthesia with different concentrations of ropivacaine on sevoflurane requirements.
We evaluated sevoflurane requirements during combined general-epidural anesthesia with different concentration of ropivacaine. ⋯ Epidural anesthesia can decrease sevoflurane requirements to a larger extent when a higher concentration of ropivacaine was applied.

Comparative Study Clinical TrialPreoperative ultra short-term entropy predicts arterial blood pressure fluctuation during the induction of anesthesia.
In this study, we sought to determine whether the preoperative nonlinear index of heart rate variability, ultra short-term entropy (UsEn), could predict cardiovascular responses to the induction of general anesthesia. ⋯ UsEn could predict arterial blood pressure fluctuations during the induction of anesthesia.

Exploring sociodemographic and personality characteristic predictors of parental pain perceptions.
We studied the relationship between children's and parents' sociodemographic and personality characteristics and parents' perceptions of their children's pain. ⋯ We conclude that many parents have misconceptions of pain and analgesics, and that child and parent personality characteristics can be used to identify parents at risk of these misconceptions.

Case ReportsCoagulopathy after cardiopulmonary bypass in Jehovah's Witness patients: management of two cases using fractionated components and factor VIIa.
Changes in the Jehovah's Witness (JW) blood refusal policy now give members the personal choice to accept certain processed fractions of blood, such as factor concentrates and cryoprecipitate. ⋯ Processed blood fractions can be a valuable adjuvant to drugs when treating bleeding in JW patients.
