Association between 6 min pegboard and ring test and arm performance in GOLD stage II-III patients.
The 6 min pegboard and ring test (6PBRT) is a valid and reproducible test of unsupported arm exercise endurance. The aim of this study was to determine the associations between the 6PBRT, activities of daily living (ADL) and hemoglobin levels in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). ⋯ The number of rings moved in the 6PBRT is associated with ADL simulation test performance that reflects upper extremity ADLs. Therefore, the 6PBRT can be used for estimating limitation in upper extremity ADLs as a simple and quick evaluation in patients with GOLD stage II-III COPD.

[Osteoporosis in pneumological diseases : Joint guideline of the Austrian Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ÖGKM) and the Austrian Society for Pneumology (ÖGP)].
Chronic inflammation induces proinflammatory cytokine cascades. In addition to systemic inflammation, hypoxemia, hypercapnia, a catabolic metabolism, gonadal or thyroid dysfunction, musculoskeletal dysfunction and inactivity as well as vitamin D deficiency contribute to an increased risk of fragility fractures. Iatrogenic causes of osteoporosis are long-term use of inhaled or systemic glucocorticoids (GC). ⋯ A bone mineral density measurement with a T‑Score < -2.5 is a threshold value for the diagnosis of osteoporosis; in contrast the vast majority of all osteoporotic fractures occur with a T‑Score > -2.5. A history of low-trauma fracture indicates osteological therapy. All antiresorptive or anabolic drugs approved in Austria for the treatment of osteoporosis are also indicated for pneumological patients with an increased fragility fracture risk of bone fractures in accordance with the national reimbursement criteria.

Randomized Controlled TrialCan reminders improve adherence to regular physical activity and exercise recommendations in people over 60 years old? : A randomized controlled study.
The purpose of the study was to investigate whether additional reminders could enhance adherence to a 12-week program consisting of regular physical activity. ⋯ The major positive observation was that both the experimental and control group participants exceeded the recommended level of physical activity. Nevertheless, there were some differences concerning the minutes of physical activity performed in favor of the intervention group.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffectiveness of focused extracorporeal shock wave therapy in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome : A randomized, placebo-controlled pilot study.
The carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common entrapment neuropathy in the general population. A conservative treatment should be considered in mild to moderate cases. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a focused extracorporeal shock wave therapy in the treatment of mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome. ⋯ Focused extracorporeal shock wave therapy is an effective and noninvasive treatment method for mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome.
