Urinary retention in a general rehabilitation unit: prevalence, clinical outcome, and the role of screening.
To document the prevalence of, risk factors for, and outcomes of, urinary retention (UR). ⋯ Clinically unsuspected UR is common in patients admitted to a general rehabilitation unit. We recommend that all patients be screened for PVR on admission as an aid in bladder management.

Initial psychometric assessment of a functional oral intake scale for dysphagia in stroke patients.
To report on the development and psychometric evaluation of a clinical scale to document change in functional oral intake of food and liquid in stroke patients. ⋯ The FOIS had adequate reliability, validity, and sensitivity to change in functional oral intake. These findings suggest that the FOIS may be appropriate for estimating and documenting change in the functional eating abilities of stroke patients over time.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialUse of ultrasound to increase effectiveness of isokinetic exercise for knee osteoarthritis.
To investigate the effects of ultrasound (US) in isokinetic muscle strengthening exercises on functional status of patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). ⋯ US treatment could increase the effectiveness of isokinetic exercise for functional improvement of knee OA, and pulsed ultrasound has a greater effect than continuous US.

Comparative StudyFailure to complete a functional restoration program for chronic musculoskeletal disorders: a prospective 1-year outcome study.
To compare comprehensively the likelihood of various socioeconomically relevant outcomes between functional restoration completers and noncompleters, while simultaneously identifying risk factors for noncompletion. ⋯ This large prospective study determined that noncompleters of interdisciplinary tertiary rehabilitation for CDOMDs had comparatively poor socioeconomic outcomes in the year after discharge from treatment, especially on work status and health utilization outcomes. These outcomes are of great relevance to societal, medical, and indemnity costs and future worker productivity. Several risk factors of possible importance in identifying potential noncompleters early in the treatment program were identified that may yield more effective interventions tailored to maintain compliance and decrease the percentage of drop-outs.

To determine if there is an association between cervical radiculopathy and tender spots in the neck and upper extremity on the side of radiculopathy. ⋯ Cervical radiculopathy was associated with increased tender spots on the side of radiculopathy, with predilection toward muscles innervated by the involved nerve root.
