Upper-extremity and mobility subdomains from the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) adult physical functioning item bank.
To create upper-extremity and mobility subdomain scores from the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) physical functioning adult item bank. ⋯ Upper-extremity and mobility subdomains shared about 35% of the variance in common, and produced comparable scores whether calibrated separately or together. The identification of the subset of items tapping these 2 aspects of physical functioning and scored using the existing PROMIS parameters provides the option of scoring these subdomains in addition to the overall physical functioning score.

Long-term disability and survival in traumatic brain injury: results from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research Model Systems.
To document long-term survival in 1-year survivors of traumatic brain injury (TBI); to compare the use of the Disability Rating Scale (DRS) and FIM as factors in the estimation of survival probabilities; and to investigate the effect of time since injury and secular trends in mortality. ⋯ Long-term survival prognosis in TBI depends on age, sex, and disability. FIM and DRS are useful prognostic measures with comparable statistical performance. Age- and disability-specific mortality rates in TBI have not declined over the last 20 years. Comparative StudyWalking ability and quality of life in subjects with transfemoral amputation: a comparison of osseointegration with socket prostheses.
To investigate walking ability and quality of life of osseointegrated leg prostheses compared with socket prostheses. ⋯ Osseointegration is a suitable intervention for persons whose prosthesis use is reduced because of socket-related problems. Subjects with OIP significantly increased their walking ability and prosthesis-related quality of life.

Maximal cardiorespiratory fitness testing in individuals with chronic stroke with cognitive impairment: practice test effects and test-retest reliability.
To evaluate, for individuals with chronic stroke with cognitive impairment, (1) the effects of a practice test on peak cardiorespiratory fitness test results; (2) cardiorespiratory fitness test-retest reliability; and (3) the relationship between individual practice test effects and cognitive impairment. ⋯ Vo(2)peak can be reliably measured in this group without a practice test. General cognitive function, however, may influence the effect of a practice test in that those with lower general cognitive function appear to respond differently to a practice test than those with higher cognitive function.

Between-limb kinematic asymmetry during gait in unilateral and bilateral mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis.
To compare lower-limb kinematic asymmetries during gait in individuals with unilateral and bilateral symptomatic osteoarthritis and controls. ⋯ Between-limb asymmetries are present even at mild to moderate stages of knee osteoarthritis. During this stage, between-limb asymmetry appears to be more prevalent in patients with bilateral symptomatic disease, suggesting that patients with unilateral disease maintain kinematic symmetry for longer in the knee osteoarthritis process. Further, early treatment strategies should target the restoration of gait symmetry and involve kinematics changes in both lower limbs. Future research is needed to determine the efficacy of such strategies with respect to kinematic asymmetry, pain, and disease progression.
