Meta AnalysisThe relationship between sex hormone-binding protein and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease using Mendelian randomisation.
The incidence of non-alcohol fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been increasing annually with the improvement of living standards. Numerous epidemiological observations have linked sex hormone-binding protein (SHBG) levels to NAFLD. However, evidence of the causal role of SHBG in the development and progression of NAFLD is still absent. Therefore, a systematic assessment of the causal relationship is needed. ⋯ The genetic tendency to high levels of SHBG was causally correlated with a reduced risk of NAFLD, indicating that circulating high levels of SHBG was a protective factor for NAFLD.

Randomized Controlled TrialBlood flow effects of percutaneous peripheral nerve stimulation. A blinded, randomized clinical trial.
The vasculature function is mainly regulated by the autonomic nervous system. Importantly, the sensory-motor nervous system also innervates peripheral vessels and has the capacity to modulate vascular tone. Here we investigated the effects of electrical stimulation of a mixed nerve trunk on blood flow in deep arteries and muscle perfusion. Our hypothesis is that stimulation of a mixed nerve can modify blood flow. ⋯ Therefore, the arterial blood flow in the arm is mainly impervious to the electrical stimulation of the median nerve, composed by autonomic and sensory-motor axons, although it produces mild modifications in the forearm muscles perfusion.

Changing trends in the prevalence of heart failure impairment with Thalassemias over three decades.
To assess the prevalence trend and contributing factors of heart failure (HF) impairment with thalassemias at global, regional and national levels. ⋯ The burden of thalassemias and accompanying HF, as well as their temporal trends, vary greatly across countries and regions. These findings can improve understanding of these conditions and guide policymakers in developing appropriate policies to address disparities between countries.

Cardiac and renal outcomes of direct oral anticoagulants in patients with atrial fibrillation.
Oral anticoagulation therapy with warfarin or direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) is the mainstay for stroke prevention in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF). The DOACs might have a lower risk of declining renal function than warfarin. This study aimed to compare renal outcomes among rivaroxaban, edoxaban, dabigatran, and warfarin. ⋯ In this study, patients treated with dabigatran had significantly reduced risks of declining renal function and composite cardiac and renal events than those treated with warfarin. However, rivaroxaban and edoxaban were not associated with lower risks of any renal outcomes than warfarin. More studies are warranted to investigate and compare the impact of renal function between different DOACs in patients with AF.

Association between lactate/albumin ratio and prognosis in patients with acute myocardial infarction.
The association between the lactate/albumin ratio (L/A) as a diagnostic indicator and unfavourable clinical outcomes has been established in patients with community-acquired pneumonia, sepsis and heart failure, but the connection between L/A and all-cause mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has yet to be fully understood. ⋯ L/A demonstrates significant independent predictive power for elevated all-cause mortality during hospitalization in patients diagnosed with AMI.
