Differential utility of various frailty diagnostic tools in non-geriatric hospital departments of several countries. A longitudinal study.
There is limited knowledge on the performance of different frailty scales in clinical settings. We sought to evaluate in non-geriatric hospital departments the feasibility, agreement and predictive ability for adverse events after 1 year follow-up of several frailty assessment tools. ⋯ Frailty is a highly frequent condition in older people attending non-geriatric hospital departments. We recommend that based upon their current feasibility and predictive ability, the FRAIL scale, CFS and FP should be preferentially used in these settings. The low concordance among the tools and differences in prevalence reported and predictive ability suggest the existence of different subtypes of frailty.

Performance of two-dimensional shear wave elastography and transient elastography compared to liver biopsy for staging of liver fibrosis.
Staging of liver fibrosis traditionally relied on liver histology; however, transient elastography (TE) and more recently two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) evolved to noninvasive alternatives. Hence, we evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of 2D-SWE assessed by the Canon Aplio i800 ultrasound system using liver biopsy as reference and compared the performance to TE. ⋯ Performance of 2D-SWE was good to excellent and well comparable with TE, supporting the application of this 2D-SWE system in the diagnostic workup of chronic liver disease.

Assessing cardiorespiratory fitness relative to sex improves surgical risk stratification.
To what extent sex-related differences in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) impact postoperative patient mortality and corresponding implications for surgical risk stratification remains to be established. ⋯ Low CRF accounted for more deaths than traditional CVD risk factors, and when CRF was considered relative to sex, the disproportionate number of females stratified unfit was corrected. These findings support clinical consideration of 'sex-specific' CRF thresholds to better inform postoperative mortality and improve surgical risk stratification.

ALKBH1 contributes to renal cell carcinoma progression by reducing N6-methyladenine of GPR137.
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) accounts for approximately 4% of all adult malignancies with high mortality worldwide. Although conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment has been applied for RCC in clinic, the mortality rate of patients is increasing each year, and patients with metastatic RCC are still suffering from poor prognosis. Thus, further investigation of the molecular mechanisms responsible for the development and progression of RCC is of particular importance. ⋯ Our results indicate that ALKBH1-GPR137 axis might be used as a potential therapeutic target in RCC, contributing to finding new prognostic biomarkers for RCC at an early stage.
