Nav1.9, encoded by sodium voltage-gated channel alpha subunit 11 (SCN11A), is one of the main sodium channels involved in pain transmission. Dysfunction of Nav1.9 alters pain sensitivity, resulting in insensitivity to pain or familial episodic pain. Our purpose was to explore the effects of SCN11A single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on postoperative pain sensitivity in Chinese Han female patients after gynecological surgery. ⋯ However, among these positive SNPs, the minor alleles of rs33985936 and rs13080116 were significantly associated with increased PCA consumption (P < .01). To our knowledge, this is the first study to report that SCN11A SNPs affect postoperative pain sensitivity in Chinese Han women after gynecological surgery. The SNP rs33985936 and rs13080116 may serve as novel predictors for postoperative pain.

Combination of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization and interrupted dosing sorafenib improves patient survival in early-intermediate stage hepatocellular carcinoma: A post hoc analysis of the START trial.
The survival benefit of treatment for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) combined with sorafenib remains uncertain. We compared the survival of patients treated with TACE and sorafenib with that of patients treated with TACE alone. ⋯ With a high patient tolerance to an interrupted sorafenib dosing schedule, the combination of TACE with sorafenib was associated with improved overall survival in early-intermediate stage HCC when compared with treatment with TACE alone.

Ultrasonic monitoring in the assessment of pulmonary recruitment and the best positive end-expiratory pressure.
The aim of this study was to explore the clinical value of ultrasonic monitoring in the assessment of pulmonary recruitment and the best positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP). Between January 2015 and June 2017, 40 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome in our hospital were randomly divided into 2 groups: ultrasound group (ULS group; n = 20) and oxygenation group (OXY group; n = 20). The PEEP incremental method was used to perform recruitment maneuvers. ⋯ The HR in both groups significantly increased, and the MAP significantly decreased. Two hours after recruitment, the HR and MAP returned to near basal levels without a significant difference between the 2 groups (P > .05). Lung ultrasound can be used to detect the endpoint of lung recruitment and the best PEEP, with good effects on lung compliance and oxygenation improvement.

Effect of bispectral index-guided anesthesia on consumption of anesthetics and early postoperative cognitive dysfunction after liver transplantation: An observational study.
The objective of this study was to summarize the incidence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) after 7days following liver transplantation (LT), and to evaluate the effectiveness of bispectral index (BIS) guided anesthetic intervention in reducing POCD. Additional serum concentrations of S100β and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) were detected during surgery to determine whether they were reliable predictors of POCD. Patients who underwent LT at Beijing YouAn Hospital Affiliated to Capital University of Medical Science from January 2014 to December 2015 were enrolled. ⋯ Patients in BIS group seem to have a mild lower incidence of POCD compared to controls, but no statistical significant. The influence of BIS-guided anesthesia on POCD needs to be further confirmed by large-scale clinical study. S100β protein and NSE are well correlative with neural injury, but NSE is more suitable for assessment of incidence of postoperative cognitive deficits after surgery.

This case-control study with a Fujian population investigated whether self-reported occupational and recreational physical activity may be associated with lung cancer. The population comprised 1622 patients with newly diagnosed primary lung cancer and 1622 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. High-intensity occupational physical activity was associated with significantly higher risk of lung cancer (OR = 1.354, 95% CI: 1.068-1.717), especially nonsmall cell lung carcinoma (OR = 1.384, 95% CI: 1.087-1.762). ⋯ The frequency of recreational physical activity was associated with a linear reduction in the risk of lung cancer (P < .001), and also specifically nonsmall cell lung cancer (P < .001). Occupational and recreational physical activity was associated with different effects on the risk of lung cancer in a Fujian population. While recreational physical activity was associated with decreased risk of lung cancer, occupational physical activity was associated with increased risk of lung cancer.
