Discordant retention of HIV-infected mothers and children: Evidence for a family-based approach from Southern Mozambique.
It is often assumed that children and their caregivers either stay in care together or discontinue together, but data is lacking on caregiver-child retention concordance. We sought to describe the pattern of care among a cohort of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected children and mothers enrolled in care at the Manhiça District Hospital (MDH). This was a retrospective review of routine HIV clinical data collected under a larger prospective HIV cohort study at MDH. ⋯ Children who presented with advanced clinical or immunological stage had increased probability of being concordantly LTFU. High rates of LTFU as well as high proportions of discordant retention among mother-child pairs were found. Prioritization of a family-based care model that has the potential to improve retention for children and caregivers is recommended.

The correlation between atmospheric visibility and influenza in Wuxi city, China.
Influenza is an acute respiratory infectious disease that poses a threat to public health. We assessed the association between atmospheric visibility and influenza and influenza-like illness (ILI) in Wuxi city, China. Daily meteorological data, ILI activity, and influenza virus infection rates were collected between 31 December 2012 and 31 December 2017. ⋯ However, we found no association between high visibility and Flu-A. In conclusion, our study contributes novel evidence for the effects of atmospheric visibility on influenza. These findings are important for the development of influenza surveillance and early warning systems in Wuxi city.

The surgical treatment of congenital scoliosis under 10 years is difficult as it involves resecting vertebrae. Moreover, patient follow-up after surgery is extremely important because the patient is a child whose growth has not been completed. However, there are very few long-term follow-up studies after surgical treatment of congenital scoliosis. ⋯ Trunk appearance of perception scale improved significantly after surgery (P = .031) and was maintained during the follow-up period (P = .078). In conclusion, posterior hemivertebra resection and fusion using pedicle screw fixation in patients under 10 years old with congenital scoliosis is a safe and effective procedure that can achieve rigid fixation and deformity correction. Complete resection of the hemivertebra is important for deformity correction and prevention of curve progression, and careful long-term follow-up is necessary.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a malignant tumor with unsatisfactory prognosis. The abnormal genes expression is significantly associated with initiation and poor prognosis of HCC. The aim of the present study was to identify molecular biomarkers related to the initiation and development of HCC via bioinformatics analysis, so as to provide a certain molecular mechanism for individualized treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma. ⋯ Additionally, 17 candidate genes from these 3 modules were significantly correlated with HCC patient survival and 15 of 17 genes exhibited high expression level in HCC samples. Moreover, 4 hub genes (CCNB1, CDK1, RRM2, BUB1B) were identified for further reanalysis of KEGG pathway, and enriched in 2 pathways, the P53 signaling pathway and cell cycle pathway. Overexpression of CCNB1, CDK1, RRM2, and BUB1B in HCC samples was correlated with poor survival in HCC patients, which could be potential therapeutic targets for HCC.

Protective effect of probiotics in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
To investigate the effects of probiotics on liver function, glucose and lipids metabolism, and hepatic fatty deposition in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Totally 140 NAFLD cases diagnosed in our hospital from March 2017 to March 2019 were randomly divided into the observation group and control group, 70 cases in each. The control group received the diet and exercise therapy, while the observation group received oral probiotics based on the control group, and the intervention in 2 groups lasted for 3 months. ⋯ After the treatment, ALT, AST, GGT, TC, TG, HOMA-IR, NAS, and conditions of fecal flora in the observation group were better than those in the control group, and the observation group was better after treatment than before. All these above differences were statistically significant (P < .05). Probiotics can improve some liver functions, glucose and lipids metabolism, hepatic fatty deposition in patients with NAFLD, which will enhance the therapeutic effects of NAFLD.
