Although bronchodilators and glucocorticoids can reduce the symptoms of cough and asthma to a certain extent, the adverse drug reactions and recurrence after recovery still trouble clinicians. Acupoint catgut embedding is effective in preventing and treating acute recurrence and deterioration of COPD, but its clinical efficacy remains controversial. Therefore, this study evaluated the clinical efficacy and safety of acupoint catgut embedding combined with conventional Western medicine for COPD through meta-analysis. ⋯ The clinical efficacy of acupoint catgut embedding combined with conventional western medicine for stable COPD is better than that of conventional western medicine, and the safety may be equivalent to that of conventional western medicine, which has the value of further research exploration.

Tuberculosis presentation and outcomes in older Hispanic adults from Tamaulipas, Mexico.
Older people are at high risk of developing and dying from pulmonary infections like tuberculosis (TB), but there are few studies among them, particularly in Hispanics. To address these gaps, we sought to identify host factors associated with TB and adverse treatment outcomes in older Hispanics by conducting a cross-sectional study of TB surveillance data from Tamaulipas, Mexico (2006-2013; n = 8381). Multivariable logistic regressions were assessed for older adults (OA ≥65 years) when compared to young (YA, 18-39 years) and middle-aged adults (40-64 years). ⋯ Diabetes was not associated with adverse outcomes in OA. Although older age is a predictor of death during TB disease, OA are not prioritized by the World Health Organization for latent TB infection screening and treatment during contact investigations. With safer, short-course latent TB infection treatment available, we propose the inclusion of OA as a high-risk group in latent TB management guidelines.

Meta Analysis
Association between the ESR1 and ESR2 polymorphisms and osteoporosis risk: An updated meta-analysis.
Gene polymorphisms of estrogen receptor (ESR) 1 PvuII (rs2234693), XbaI (rs9340799), G2014A (rs2228480), ESR2 AluI (rs4986938), and RsaI (rs1256049) had been reported to be associated with the risk of osteoporosis. However, these conclusions were inconsistent, therefore, an updated meta-analysis was conducted to further explore these issues. ⋯ In summary, this study shows that all substantial associations between gene polymorphisms of ESR1 (PvuII, XbaI, and G2014A) and ESR 2 (AluI and RsaI) and osteoporosis risk are possibly false positive results instead of real associations or biological variables.

Treating vitiligo in clinical practice is challenging. Furthermore, oral drugs used in Western medicine have considerable side effects and are unsuitable for long-term treatment. In contrast, Chinese patent medicines (CPMs) are more suitable for long-term oral vitiligo treatment, but medical evidence of their efficacy and safety is lacking. Therefore, in this study, the efficacy and safety of CPMs were evaluated and ranked using a Bayesian network meta-analysis. ⋯ In treating vitiligo, QT is most effective but only suitable for short-term administration owing to its poor safety. VCP and QP could be used as first-choice long-term medications. TP may positively affect repigmentation in patients with limited lesion areas.
