Thyroid dysfunction and risk of different types of dementia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
The impact of thyroid function on the risk of various types of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VD), remains unclear. This meta-analysis investigates the association between thyroid dysfunction and the risk of these dementia types, aiming to inform strategies for dementia prevention. ⋯ This study suggests that overt hypothyroidism may reduce the risk of dementia, including AD and VD, whereas overt and subclinical hyperthyroidism are linked to an increased risk. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring thyroid function as a preventative measure against dementia.

Prediabetes has been found to be associated with an elevated overall risk of cancer, which may be site-specific. we performed a protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the correlation between prediabetes and the incidence of gastric cancer (GC). ⋯ The presence of prediabetes may increase the risk of GC by a mild amount when compared with people with normoglycemia in community-derived adult populations.

Percutaneous cement discoplasty for the treatment of lumbar degenerative diseases: A system review and meta-analysis.
Lumbar degenerative disease (LDD) is one of the main causes of low back pain in the elderly. Surgical treatment usually involves decompression surgery and fusion techniques; however, standard fusion surgery in elderly patients is associated with a higher rate of complications, hospital length of stay, and readmission. Although minimally invasive surgery can reduce risk and shorten hospital stays, it still cannot eliminate the inherent complications of fusion or internal fixation, especially in frail patients. Therefore, it is necessary to find a surgical technology that can not only reduce the risk of operation but also effectively reduce the inherent complications of fusion or internal fixation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy and feasibility of percutaneous cement discoplasty for the treatment of LDDs. ⋯ Studies have shown that percutaneous cement discoplasty is a potential intervention for the treatment of LDDs, which can effectively relieve pain and improve dysfunction.

Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone density and microarchitectural deterioration, resulting in increased fracture risk. With an aging population, osteoporosis imposes a heavy burden worldwide. Current pharmacotherapies such as bisphosphonates can reduce fracture risk but have limitations. ⋯ However, optimal dosing, delivery methods, and long-term safety require further investigation. Modulating the gut-bone axis via supplementation, prebiotics/probiotics, diet, and lifestyle interventions represents an innovative therapeutic approach for osteoporosis. Harnessing the interplay between microbiome, metabolism, immunity, and bone may provide new directions for managing osteoporosis in the future.

Neurodegenerative diseases are complex disorders that significantly challenge human health, with their incidence increasing with age. A key pathological feature of these diseases is the accumulation of misfolded proteins. The underlying mechanisms involve an imbalance in calcium homeostasis and disturbances in autophagy, indicating a likely correlation between them. ⋯ Researchers propose that Ca2+ regulates autophagy through distinct signal transduction mechanisms, under normal or stressful conditions, and thereby contributing to the occurrence and development of neurodegenerative diseases. This review provides a systematic examination of the regulatory mechanisms of Ca2+ in cell membranes and different organelles, as well as its downstream pathways that influence autophagy and its implications for neurodegenerative diseases. This comprehensive analysis may facilitate the development of new drugs and provide more precise treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.
