Association of serum iron metabolism with muscle mass and frailty in older adults: A cross-sectional study of community-dwelling older adults.
This study aimed to explore the correlation between serum ferritin and additional biomarkers associated with iron metabolism, as well as their connection to muscle atrophy and frailty in the community-dwelling middle-aged and elderly population. The study included 110 middle-aged and elderly participants. Participants were categorized into an iron accumulation group (31 cases) and a normal iron group (79 cases) based on the standard ferritin values for men and women. ⋯ Age, gender and ferritin were the influencing factors of frailty classification (P < .05). Disrupted iron metabolism can lead to decreased muscle mass and function among the middle-aged and elderly, increasing frailty risk. It's crucial to prioritize community-based frailty screening and prevention, focusing on iron utilization as well as storage, since accelerating the body's iron metabolism cycle might influence muscle health more significantly than iron reserves.

Path analysis for affecting the physical fitness of marine majors: A cross-sectional observational study from the perspective of health.
The physical fitness of marine major students is critically linked to their academic performance and future career prospects. To investigate the influence of various environmental factors on the physical fitness of maritime majors and to identify potential strategies for improving physical fitness among this population. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted among maritime students. ⋯ Social support influences the sports lifestyle of marine majors, which in turn affects BMI and PFI. Pleasure-type and fitness-type sports lifestyles serve as mediators between social support and PFI, while BMI is also a mediator between sports lifestyle and PFI. Social support affects the sports lifestyle of marine majors, which affects BMI and directly influences PFI.

It may be difficult to distinguish between enchondroma and low-grade malignant cartilage tumors (grade 1) radiologically. This study aimed to construct machine learning models using 3D computed tomography (CT)-based radiomics analysis to differentiate low-grade chondrosarcoma from enchondroma. A total of 30 patients with enchondroma and 26 with chondrosarcoma were included in this retrospective study. ⋯ Therefore, a dataset containing 107 features was used for machine learning classification. When assessed based on area under curve (AUC) values, classification using all features revealed that naive Bayes was the best model (AUC = 0.950), while classification using 5 features revealed that random forest was the best model for differentiating chondrosarcoma from enchondroma (AUC = 0.967). In conclusion, machine learning models using CT-based radiomics analysis can be used to differentiate between low-grade chondrosarcoma and enchondroma.

Pancreatic head carcinoma derived from the dorsal pancreas is more likely to metastasize early than from the ventral pancreas through microvascular invasion.
The development of the pancreatic head originates from the fusion of the ventral and dorsal pancreatic primordia during embryonic development. Theoretically, the origin of pancreatic head cancer also exists from the ventral pancreas and the dorsal pancreas. Among 49 patients with pancreatic head cancer, pancreatic head cancer was divided into pancreatic head cancer originating from the ventral (PHCv) or dorsal pancreas (PHCd) through imaging and pathological classification. ⋯ The results showed that the patients from the PHCd group had worse long-term survival than those from the PHCv group (10 months vs 14.5 months). Similarly, the progression-free survival (PFS) results also indicate that patients from the PHCd group had a shorter time than those from the PHCv group (5 months vs 9.5 months). Further stratified analysis of potentially related factors showed that microvascular invasion is related to poor prognosis, and patients with pancreatic head cancer derived from the dorsal pancreas are more likely to develop microvascular invasion.

The impact of restrictive blood transfusion on the safety of patients with esophageal varices after endoscopic variceal ligation: A single-center retrospective study.
An investigation was conducted to examine the impact of restrictive blood transfusion on the safety of early rebleeding following endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) in patients with liver cirrhosis. Data were collected from patients with cirrhosis and esophageal varices who underwent EVL at the Affiliated Hospital of North Sichuan Medical College between September 2021 and March 2023. Clinical information, including serum albumin levels, hemoglobin (Hb) levels, liver function classification, and the occurrence of early rebleeding, was recorded. ⋯ The early rebleeding rate was significantly varied between the groups with different Hb levels after EVL. Multivariate logistic analysis revealed that restrictive blood transfusion (OR = 4.61, 95% CI: 1.06-19.99; P = .041), Hb (OR = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.95-0.97; P < .001), and Child-Pugh class C (OR = 6.37, 95% CI: 1.28-31.67; P = .024) were identified as independent factors influencing early rebleeding. Our findings suggest that the risk of early rebleeding in cirrhotic patients after EVL may be increased by restrictive blood transfusion, and this should be further investigated in future research.
