Observational Study
Significance of serum NLRP3 as a potential predictor of 5-year death in hemodialysis patients: A prospective observational cohort study.
Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) is involved in inflammatory response. This study was done to explore the role of serum NLRP3 as a predictive biomarker of death after hemodialysis. In this prospective observational study of 331 patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis, serum NLRP3 levels were measured. ⋯ The mortality prediction model had significantly higher predictive ability than age, AMCCE, and serum NLRP3 alone under receiver operating characteristic curve (all P < .05). The models, which were graphically represented by nomograms, performed well under calibration curve and decision curve. Serum NLRP3 levels are independently related to 5-year mortality and overall survival of patients after hemodialysis, suggesting that serum NLRP3 may be a potential prognostic biomarker of hemodialysis patients.

A real-world analysis of roxadustat effectiveness and safety in managing renal anemia among patients on maintenance hemodialysis: An observational study.
We aimed to compare the clinical efficacy and safety of roxadustat with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, particularly erythropoietin (EPO), in the treatment of maintenance hemodialysis patients with renal anemia. A prospective cohort study was carried out at the Nephrology Department of the Nantong First People's Hospital and Nantong University Affiliated Hospital from December 2020 to December 2021. We compared hemoglobin (Hb) levels, serum ferritin (SF) levels, and adverse cardiovascular events between the roxadustat and EPO groups at 1, 3, and 6 months into the treatment. ⋯ However, no statistically significant differences were found between the 2 groups at 3 and 6 months (P > .05). Additionally, there were no significant differences in SF levels and the occurrence of adverse cardiovascular events between the 2 groups after treatment (P > .05). Roxadustat was superior to EPO in the initial treatment phase, while its cardiovascular safety was comparable to that of EPO.

Both spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and Phenylketonuria (PKU) are caused by biallelic pathogenic mutations. However, there has been no report on case who suffering from both diseases simultaneously. SMA mainly affects the motor function while PKU may have an impact on both the intelligence and motor function. But if only 1 disease is treated while neglecting the other, the treatment effect will be compromised. Here, for the first time, we report a case from China diagnosed with both these diseases and treated properly. ⋯ To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of SMA combined with PKU. This case expands our understanding of diagnosis for synchronous SMA and PKU and highlights the importance of comprehensive examinations and the utilizing of various genetic testing methods to make an accurate diagnosis of genetic diseases, which may help avoiding the progressive damage caused by certain genetic disease with insidious clinical symptoms.

This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the levels of health literacy and the associated factors among the general population living in 2 schistosomiasis-endemic villages in Jiangxi Province, China. Multistage stratified random sampling was used to select participants, and a face-to-face survey was conducted from July to August 2021 to collect participants' socio-demographic characteristics and levels of overall health literacy (HL) and its 3 subscales: health literacy of basic knowledge and concepts (HL-BKC), health literacy of behavior and lifestyle (HL-BAL), and health literacy of health-related skills (HL-HRS). The Chi-square test and logistic regression models were used to assess the association between socio-demographic characteristics and low HL levels. ⋯ The prevalence of low HL is high among the population in the schistosomiasis-endemic villages of Jiangxi Province, China. Age, education level, occupation, and annual household income were all independent factors associated with HL levels. Health educational interventions to improve HL should be simultaneously conducted in health promotion work to reduce risky habits.

Timely treatment and recovery of cardiac arrest in out-of-hospital settings present significant challenges. This report describes a novel method of integrating advanced monitoring techniques such as radial artery cannulation in the treatment of an 85-year-old male patient who suffered an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). ⋯ This case underscores the significant role of radial artery cannulation for invasive blood pressure monitoring in improving clinical outcomes for patients experiencing OHCA. Integrating radial artery cannulation with other advanced monitoring techniques aids in the early detection of the return of spontaneous circulation and optimizes subsequent intensive care treatment.
