Comparative Study
Variability in rates of arthrodesis for patients with thoracolumbar spine fractures with and without associated neurologic injury.
Retrospective cohort study using a large clinical database. ⋯ Hospital teaching status and spine fracture volume affected rates of spine arthrodesis in thoracolumbar fracture patients with and without neurologic injury. Variability in fusion rate for thoracolumbar spine trauma appears to be lower than that reported for elective spine procedures, especially in the presence of a neurologic injury.

Risk factors affecting the immediate postoperative course in pediatric scoliosis surgery.
A retrospective analysis of pediatric records of idiopathic scoliosis (IS) and neuromuscular scoliosis (NMS) etiology, in a search for complications and their risk factors immediately following surgical repair. ⋯ While NMS etiology, anterior and combined fusions correlated with a worse course, the Cobb angle, number of fused vertebrae, and the addition of thoracoplasty did not. Optimization of postoperative care should be carried out accordingly. Scoliosis surgery is safe even in extreme curves and long fusions. Thoracoplasty can be added whenever indicated, in order to improve the overall outcome.

Case report and clinical discussion. ⋯ To our knowledge, this is the first case of intradural cervical disc herniation in a KFS patient described in the literature.

Local metastases along the tract of needle: a rare complication of vertebroplasty in treating spinal metastases.
Needle tract seeding after biopsy has been reported by many authors. Since the procedure of needle insertion in vertebroplasty is the same as in biopsy, tumor metastasis along the tract of the needle in vertebroplasty should be possible. ⋯ To our knowledge, local metastasis after vertebroplasty in treating spinal metastases has not been reported in the literature. However, this may be a potential complication of vertebroplasty in treating spinal metastases as improvement in cancer treatments occurs with subsequent longer survival times.
