Activated CD11b+ CD15+ granulocytes increase in the blood of patients with uveal melanoma.
To determine whether activated CD11b(+) CD15(+) granulocytes increase in the blood of patients with uveal melanoma. ⋯ Activated CD11b(+) CD15(+) granulocytes expand in the blood of patients with uveal melanoma and may contribute to immune evasion by ocular tumors by inhibiting T-cell function via decreasing CD3zeta chain expression.

Prevalence and risk factors of undercorrected refractive errors among Singaporean Malay adults: the Singapore Malay Eye Study.
To describe the prevalence and the risk factors of undercorrected refractive error in an adult urban Malay population. ⋯ Undercorrected refractive error is a significant cause of correctable visual impairment among Singaporean Malay adults, affecting one in five persons.

Relationship between optical coherence tomography, pattern electroretinogram and automated perimetry in eyes with temporal hemianopia from chiasmal compression.
To evaluate the relationship between pattern electroretinogram (PERG) amplitude, macular and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness by optical coherence tomography (OCT), and visual field (VF) loss on standard automated perimetry (SAP) in eyes with temporal hemianopia from chiasmal compression. ⋯ In patients with chiasmal compression, PERG amplitude and OCT thickness measurements were significant related to VF loss, but not to each other. OCT and PERG quantify neuronal loss differently, but both technologies are useful in understanding structure-function relationship in patients with chiasmal compression. (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00553761).

Effects of pirfenidone on proliferation, migration, and collagen contraction of human Tenon's fibroblasts in vitro.
To investigate the effect of pirfenidone, a novel antifibrotic agent, on proliferation, migration, and collagen contraction of human Tenon's fibroblasts (HTFs). ⋯ These findings indicate that pirfenidone inhibits proliferation, migration, and collagen contraction of HTFs at nontoxic concentrations. A decrease in autocrine TGF-beta signaling may have a role in the effects of pirfenidone.

A novel rat model with obesity-associated retinal degeneration.
A strong association between retinal degeneration and obesity has been shown in humans. However, the molecular basis of increased risk for retinal degeneration in obesity is unknown. Thus, an animal model with obesity and retinal degeneration would greatly aid the understanding of obesity-associated retinal degeneration. The retinal abnormalities in a novel rat model (WNIN-Ob) with spontaneously developed obesity are described. ⋯ WNIN-Ob rats develop increased stress in retinal tissue and progressive retinal degeneration after the onset of severe obesity. The WNIN-Ob rat is the first rat model to develop retinal degeneration after the onset of obesity. This novel rat model may be a valuable tool for investigating retinal degeneration associated with obesity in humans.
