Human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7) is the least studied beta-herpesvirus in transplant settings. This prospective study examined the activity of HHV-7 during the first 12 weeks post-stem cell transplant in 59 paediatric patients. The presence of HHV-7, human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) in blood was monitored weekly by a multiplex nested polymerase chain reaction. ⋯ Acyclovir had no effect, whereas ganciclovir was associated with a lower rate of HHV-7 reactivation (P=0.009). One patient died of HHV-7 associated brain stem encephalitis. The administration of colony stimulating factor, occurrence of acute graft versus host disease, time to neutrophil and platelet engraftment showed no significant association with the occurrence of HHV-7 DNAaemia.

Recurrent respiratory papillomas are benign airway tumors caused by Human Papillomaviruses (HPVs) types 6 and 11. The disease is characterized by multiple recurrences of papillomas following surgical removal, caused by activation of latent HPV DNA. Most patients have laryngeal disease, while only a small subset has tracheal involvement. ⋯ There was also no significant difference between tracheal latency with HPV 6 and HPV 11. We conclude that HPV infects tracheal mucosa and is maintained as a latent infection in the trachea as efficiently as in the larynx. Therefore, we propose that the low frequency of tracheal disease reflects a lower frequency of HPV activation, and postulate that cellular factors that differ between the stratified squamous epithelium of the larynx and the ciliated pseudo-stratified columnar epithelium of the trachea contribute to this difference.

Comparison of the seroprevalence of human metapneumovirus and human respiratory syncytial virus.
Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a virus that induces human respiratory syncytial virus (hRSV)-like illnesses, ranging from upper respiratory tract infection to severe bronchiolitis and pneumonia. The 100 serum samples from children aged 1 month to 5 years were tested for the presence of hMPV and hRSV antibodies using an indirect immunofluorescence assay and a neutralizing-antibody assay, respectively. The seroprevalence of hMPV was significantly lower than that of hRSV in children over 4-months-old (43% vs. 60%, P < 0.025), and the difference was particularly notable between the ages of 4 months and 1 year (11% vs. 48%, P = 0.006). The results suggest that primary infection with hMPV occurs somewhat later than that with hRSV.

The aim of this study was to investigate potential differences in the local nasal immune response between bronchiolitis and upper respiratory tract infection induced by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Nasal brush samples were obtained from 14 infants with RSV bronchiolitis and from 8 infants with RSV upper respiratory tract infection. The samples were taken during infection (acute phase) and 2-4 weeks later (convalescent phase). ⋯ By contrast, the number of IL-8, IFN-gamma, IL-4, and IL-10-positive cells remained constant. In conclusion, clear differences were found in nasal immune responses of children with RSV-induced upper respiratory tract infection or bronchiolitis. The induction of a strong IL-18 response was typical for bronchiolitis, as this could not be observed in RSV-induced upper respiratory tract infection, and could explain the eosinophilia that is observed frequently during bronchiolitis.

The molecular epidemiological and clinical aspects of hepatitis D virus (HDV) in a unique HBV, HCV, and HDV triple virus endemic community in southern Taiwan were investigated. A total of 2,909 residents aged 45 or older were screened for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), anti-HCV antibody, and anti-HDV antibody (specifically for HBsAg-positive carriers). Factors that might be associated with HDV infection, viral nucleic acid detection, and genotyping of HBV, HCV, and HDV were investigated. ⋯ HCV suppressed the replication of HBV among triple vital infection patients. HBV and HDV lapsed into a remission or nonreplicative phase in most cases, and HCV acted as a dominant factor in triple viral-infected individuals. Only the presence of HCV RNA was associated with elevated ALT values, but not HBV or HDV.
