Transcutaneous contrast-enhanced sonography of peripheral lung lesions.
Transpulmonary sonography contrast agents, in conjunction with contrast-specific imaging techniques, are increasingly accepted in clinical use for diagnostic imaging of several organs. Anatomically, the lung is characterized by dual blood sources, supplied from both the pulmonary and bronchial arteries. Contrast-enhanced sonography enables us to determine whether the pulmonary or the bronchial arteries are the source of blood to lung lesions, depending on the time to enhancement and the extent of enhancement after contrast agent application. ⋯ This article reports our first experience with transcutaneous contrast-enhanced sonography for the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of peripheral lung lesions.

Chance-type fractures of the thoracolumbar spine: imaging analysis in 53 patients.
Chance-type fractures are subtle unstable injuries that are often associated with intraabdominal injuries. CT-based observations made during routine interpretations revealed involvement of a burst component to this fracture pattern and a clue on the transaxial images to its presence. The purpose of this review was to determine how often these features occurred in a retrospective study of a large sample because these findings influence diagnosis and management. ⋯ Intraabdominal injuries occurred in 40% of flexion-distraction thoracolumbar fractures in our study cohort, which is slightly lower than previously reported. About half of the patients with this injury displayed a burst-type component that could have a significant influence on surgical management. The dissolving pedicle sign can assist in recognition of this often subtle injury on transaxial CT.

Follow-up of extracranial vertebral artery stents with Doppler sonography.
The objective of our study was to determine the Doppler sonography findings suggestive of restenosis in the follow-up of patients treated by stent placement in the extracranial vertebral artery. ⋯ Follow-up of vertebral artery stents with Doppler sonography may be performed by direct insonation of the stent or by indirect measurements from the V2 segment (the part of the vertebral artery that courses within the intervertebral foramina). The V2 segment Doppler sonography measurements may guide future examinations and provide essential information regarding the proximally deployed stent.

Clinical TrialMDCT of the elbow in pediatric patients with posttraumatic elbow effusions.
The purpose of this study was to determine the performance characteristics of MDCT in the detection of fractures in children with posttraumatic elbow effusions and to assess the effect of MDCT findings on clinical management. ⋯ MDCT is a sensitive means of evaluating for radiographically occult fractures in children with posttraumatic elbow effusions. It has a high negative predictive value and a high level of interobserver agreement. MDCT findings may lead to alteration of treatment of children with nondisplaced lateral condylar and radial head fractures.

Clinical TrialOptimal TE for SPIO-enhanced gradient-recalled echo MRI for the detection of focal hepatic lesions.
The objective of our study was to determine the optimal TE for superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO)-enhanced gradient-recalled echo (GRE) MRI for the detection of focal hepatic lesions. ⋯ For ferucarbotran-enhanced MRI, lesion SDNR was highest on images obtained using a TE of 13.5 milliseconds, but the sensitivity and lesion conspicuity were comparable at TEs of 9 and 18 milliseconds. The SDNR of liver lesions varied according to the lesion's potential capability of taking up SPIO agents.
