Comparative Study Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical TrialThe effects of heparin flush on patency of the Groshong catheter: a pilot study.
To determine whether the addition or a heparinized saline flush would decrease clot formation and persistent withdrawal occlusion (PWO) in Groshong (Bard Access Systems, Salt Lake City, UT) catheters. ⋯ The safe delivery of medication and the ability to obtain blood specimens are vital for patients who depend on functioning venous access catheters. Flushing Groshong catheters with heparinized saline decreases the likelihood of intraluminal clot formation and catheter malfunction.

ReviewManaging the multiple causes of nausea and vomiting in the patient with cancer.
To review the multiple causes of nausea and vomiting in the patient with cancer. Pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic management strategies are provided to deal with each type, and selected clinical nursing research is discussed. ⋯ Healthcare providers must thoroughly assess and reassess the patient's disease status and current treatment interventions to effectively manage nausea and vomiting. Nurses can participate in this assessment and provide the appropriate drug therapies as well as continue to develop non-pharmacologic intervention methods that the patient can implement independently.

To describe the development, implementation, and evaluation of a tool to standardize assessment, monitoring, management, and documentation of acute and chronic pain in hospitalized patients. ⋯ The use of a pain assessment and management flow sheet with a pain protocol provides an organized, consistent approach that maximizes quality, cost-effective care.
