Primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) is a common disease where surgery is indicated for persistant air leak or recurrent pneumothorax. We studied the outcomes of PSP-surgery over a 28 year period in a whole nation. ⋯ Surgical treament for PSP is safe and major early complications rare. The rate of recurrent pneumothorax requiring surgery was 6%, which is similar to other studies. For unknown reasons the incidence of PSP surgery declined, but future research has to answer if it is linked to decreased smoking in the Icelandic population.

In the first half of the 20th century, Icelandic doctors and teachers began documenting the health of school children, believing that physical measurements were important to monitoring physical development. The measurements could also be used for comparison in other areas and for reasearch. At the Reginonal Archives of Skagafjordur, rare data about the physique of children in Saudarkrokur in 1912-1953, measured by Jon Th. Bjornsson, is preserved. ⋯ A significant increase in measured factors in 2018-2019 compared to 1912-1953 can possibly be attributed to improved quality of life.

Because of the early onset and disabling symptoms of schizophrenia spectrum disorders many individuals with these disorders are unemployed from an early age and disability pension rates are high. The aim of this study was to assess functional recovery and identify vocational predictors among young first episode psychosis patients registered in an early intervention psychosis center in Iceland in 2010-2020. ⋯ In spite of intensive rehabilitation at an early intervention center, almost half of the patients were neither employed nor in school at discharge. The strongest vocational predictor was vocational rehabilitation which was also one of few vocational predictors that can be influenced by admission to an early intervention psychosis center. It therefore seems important to ensure that effective vocational rehabilitation is readily available at early intervention psychosis centers.
