Randomized Controlled TrialRandomized study on early detection of lung cancer with MSCT in Germany: study design and results of the first screening round.
Low-dose multislice-CT (MSCT) detects many early-stage lung cancers with good prognosis, but whether it decreases lung cancer mortality and at which costs is yet insufficiently explored. Scope of the present study is to examine within a common European effort whether MSCT screening is capable to reduce the lung cancer mortality by at least 20 % and at which amount of undesired side effects this could be achieved. ⋯ The indicated performance indicators fit into the range observed in comparable trials. The study continues finalizing the second screening round and for the first participants even the last screening round. The unresolved issue of the precise amount of side effects and the high early recall rate precludes currently the recommendation of MSCT as screening tool for lung cancer.

Age effect on bone mineral density changes in breast cancer patients receiving anastrozole: results from the ARBI prospective clinical trial.
We investigated whether age at anastrozole (A) initiation influences the effect of treatment on bone mineral density (BMD). We conducted a post hoc analysis of the dataset of Arimidex Bone Mass Index Oral Bisphosphonates prospective trial, studying the effect of risedronate (R) on BMD of postmenopausal, early breast cancer patients receiving A. ⋯ Our study suggests that younger postmenopausal women with normal BMD or mild osteopenia receiving A-only face an increased risk of bone loss in LS. Among patients with mild or severe osteopenia or osteoporosis treated with A + R, 12 months LS or HP BMD variations were configured regardless of age group.

Roles of ABCB1 gene polymorphisms and haplotype in susceptibility to breast carcinoma risk and clinical outcomes.
Genetic variants of ABCB1 gene contributed to cancer susceptibility and interindividual differences in chemotherapy response. Therefore, we investigated the relevance between genetic variations in ABCB1 gene and both risk and clinical outcomes of breast carcinoma. ⋯ These results suggest that ABCB1 gene C3435T, G2677T/A variations and haplotype 3435T-1236T-2677T relate to the risk and clinical outcomes of breast carcinoma and may function as candidate molecular markers of anthracycline chemosensitivity in breast carcinoma.

Review Meta AnalysisEffectiveness and safety of pemetrexed-based doublet versus pemetrexed alone as second-line treatment for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
To compared pemetrexed-based doublet with single-agent pemetrexed as second-line treatment for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer ⋯ Pemetrexed-based doublet therapy didn't gain any benefit in survival but significantly improved PFS and better ORR compared with single-agent pemetrexed as second-line therapy for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. However, more incidences of grade 3 or 4 neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and leucopenia were observed in pemetrexed-based doublet group.

MiR-181d acts as a tumor suppressor in glioma by targeting K-ras and Bcl-2.
Recently, several microRNAs (miRNAs) were reported to be involved in the modulation of glioma development. The aim of our study was to determine the effect of miR-181d on the growth of glioma and to investigate whether this growth is modulated by targeting K-ras and Bcl-2. ⋯ MiR-181d may act as a glioma suppressor by targeting K-ras and Bcl-2.
