Case ReportsDry Needling Combined With Physical Therapy in Patients With Chronic Postsurgical Pain Following Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Case Series.
Study Design Case series. Background This case series describes a combined program of dry needling and therapeutic exercise in a small group of patients with persistent pain following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Case Description Fourteen patients who underwent TKA had persistent postsurgical pain and myofascial trigger points that were nonresponsive to treatment with conventional physical therapy and/or medication. ⋯ Level of Evidence Therapy, level 4. The Effect of Visual Feedback of the Neck During Movement in People With Chronic Whiplash-Associated Disorders: An Experimental Study.
Study Design Controlled laboratory study. Background Chronic whiplash-associated disorder (WAD) is an important health issue associated with poor recovery outcomes. Sensorimotor incongruence (SMI), defined as a mismatch between the efference copy in the brain and afferent sensory feedback from the body, is proposed as a possible underlying cause of chronic pain. ⋯ The hypothesis that SMI causes pain was not substantiated by the results of the present study. Carpal tunnel syndrome causes pain, numbness, and weakness in the wrist and hand. Nearly 50% of all work-related injuries are linked to carpal tunnel syndrome, and people with this injury are more likely to miss work because of it. Patients with carpal tunnel syndrome can be treated with physical therapy or surgery. ⋯ Based on the potential side effects and risks of surgery, patients often ask if they might try physical therapy first.
