Case ReportsCalcaneal Osteosarcoma in a Patient Referred for Plantar Heel Pain.
A 28-year-old man was referred to physical therapy from his primary care provider with variable and intermittent left lateral plantar heel pain that began insidiously about 10 months prior. Radiographs of the foot and ankle were completed prior to the physical therapy evaluation and interpreted as noncontributory. ⋯ Percutaneous biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of calcaneal osteogenic sarcoma. Treatment Effect Sizes of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy for Pain and Disability in Patients With Low Back Pain: A Systematic Review.
Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) is a treatment-based classification system founded on 3 core principles: classification into diagnostic syndromes, classification-based intervention, and appropriate application of force. Many randomized controlled trials have investigated the efficacy of MDT for low back pain; however, results have varied. Promoting the Use of Self-management Strategies for People With Persistent Musculoskeletal Disorders: The Role of Physical Therapists.
Persistent musculoskeletal pain is a worldwide health problem resulting in negative effects on individuals' wellbeing and substantial costs to society. Recently, there has been discussion about effective treatment approaches to persistent musculoskeletal disorders, including low back pain. In this Viewpoint, the authors argue that self-management strategies are essential to the management of persistent musculoskeletal disorders and outline the physical therapist's role in supporting effective self-management.
