Evaluation of the STarT Back Screening Tool for Prediction of Low Back Pain Intensity in an Outpatient Physical Therapy Setting.
Study Design Prospective cohort study. Background Optimal management of patients with low back pain (LBP) relies on accurate prognosis of future clinical outcomes. The STarT Back Screening Tool (SBT), a prognostic index developed and validated in the primary care setting, has 3 scoring measures: SBT overall, psychosocial, and categorical scores. ⋯ Level of Evidence Prognosis, level 4. Case ReportsIntra-articular Focal Nodular Synovitis of the Knee.
A 32-year-old woman was referred to physical therapy by her primary care provider (PCP) for complaints of limited right knee extension and pain. Radiographs of her right knee ordered by her PCP prior to physical therapy evaluation were noncontributory. ⋯ The radiologist recommended contrast imaging to further characterize the mass, which was found to be consistent with focal nodular synovitis. Case ReportsComplaints of Upper Extremity Numbness and Tingling Relieved With Dry Needling of the Teres Minor and Infraspinatus: A Case Report.
Study Design Case report. Background Abnormal sensation, such as numbness or tingling, is traditionally thought to originate from neural compression. There is limited evidence to support reports of abnormal sensation arising from a trigger point. ⋯ Level of Evidence Therapy, level 5. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2017;47(4):287-292. Case ReportsDry Needling Combined With Physical Therapy in Patients With Chronic Postsurgical Pain Following Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Case Series.
Study Design Case series. Background This case series describes a combined program of dry needling and therapeutic exercise in a small group of patients with persistent pain following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Case Description Fourteen patients who underwent TKA had persistent postsurgical pain and myofascial trigger points that were nonresponsive to treatment with conventional physical therapy and/or medication. ⋯ Level of Evidence Therapy, level 4. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2017;47(3):209-216. Epub 3 Feb 2017. doi:10.2519/jospt.2017.7089.
