Loss of entorhinal cortex and hippocampal volumes compared to whole brain volume in normal aging: the SMART-Medea study.
In non-demented elderly age-related decline in hippocampal volume has often been observed, but it is not clear if this loss is disproportionate relative to other brain tissue. Few studies examined age-related volume loss of the entorhinal cortex. We investigated the association of age with hippocampal and entorhinal cortex (ERC) volumes in a large sample of middle-aged and older persons without dementia. ⋯ However, no age-related decline in hippocampal volume relative to BV was observed (B per year older=0.005 ml; 95% CI -0.002 to 0.01). No age-related decline in ERC volume relative to ICV or BV was observed. In this population of nondemented patients with a history of vascular disease no age-related decline in entorhinal cortex volume was observed and although hippocampal volume decreased with age, it was not disproportionate relative to total brain volume.

No association between catechol-O-methyltransferase polymorphisms and neurotic disorders among mainland Chinese university students.
This study investigates the genetic association between catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene polymorphisms and neurotic disorders. Data were derived from a case-control association study of 255 undergraduates affected by neurotic disorders and 269 matched healthy undergraduate controls. ⋯ The eight tag SNPs on the COMT gene assessed were not associated with neurotic disorders. Our finding suggests that the COMT gene may not be a susceptibility gene for neurotic disorders.

Utility of self-reported sleep disturbances as a marker for major depressive disorder (MDD): findings from the World Mental Health Japan Survey 2002-2006.
Although major depressive disorder (MDD) is a serious common disease, many depressive patients seek primary care with complaints of sleep disturbances that remain undiagnosed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the utility of self-reported sleep disturbances as a marker for MDD. This study investigated the association between 12-month prevalence of self-reported sleep disturbances and MDD using data from a cross-sectional survey in Japan. ⋯ Comorbid role impairment increases the probability of MDD. Clinicians should be cautious in assessments of young people who have sleep disturbances. Daytime sleepiness should be included among the questions asked when inquiring about sleep disturbances.

Serum concentrations of CRP, IL-6, TNF-α and cortisol in major depressive disorder with melancholic or atypical features.
The aim of the present study was to explore possible differences between serum C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and cortisol concentration in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) with melancholic features, and MDD with atypical features. As secondary aim, we investigated possible associations with clinical features such as suicidal ideation, number of episodes, duration of depression and symptomatology severity. We included 55 MDD patients (32 with melancholic features and 23 with atypical features) and 18 healthy controls. ⋯ A positive correlation was found between the severity of depressive symptoms, concentrations of IL-6 and cortisol in the MDD group with melancholic features, while a negative correlation was observed between IL-6 and CRP in the MDD group with atypical feature. Also, in the MDD group with atypical features, there was a correlation between the severity of anxiety symptoms based on the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HARS), concentration of CRP, and the duration of symptoms. In conclusion, we observed several differences in serum CRP, IL-6, and cortisol concentrations in MDD patients considering clinical features as well.

Reduced white matter fractional anisotropy and clinical symptoms in schizophrenia: a voxel-based diffusion tensor imaging study.
Although not consistently replicated, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies in schizophrenia have revealed lower fractional anisotropy (FA) in various white matter regions, a finding consistent with the disruption of white matter integrity. In this study, we used voxel-based DTI to investigate possible whole-brain differences in the white matter FA values between 58 schizophrenia patients and 58 healthy controls. ⋯ Furthermore, in the patient group, the FA value of the anterior part of the corpus callosum was negatively correlated with the avolition score on the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms. These findings suggest widespread disruption of white matter integrity in schizophrenia, which could partly explain the severity of negative symptomatology.
