Clinical TrialIntermittent hypoxic exposure does not improve endurance performance at altitude.
This study examined the effect of 1 wk of normobaric intermittent hypoxic exposure (IHE) combined with exercise training on endurance performance at a 4300-m altitude (HA). ⋯ One week of IHE combined with exercise training does not improve endurance performance at a 4300-m altitude in male lowlanders.

Interactive video game exercise leads to improved exercise adherence and health-related physical fitness in comparison to traditional stationary cycling. It has been postulated that interactive video game exercise has greater metabolic requirements than traditional cycling; however, this has not been tested to date. ⋯ Interactive video game cycling results in greater metabolic requirements (despite similar perceptions of exertion) at submaximal constant workloads than traditional cycling. This form of training may be a novel and an attractive intervention in the battle against physical inactivity and associated health complications.

Personality, physical fitness, and affective response to exercise among adolescents.
Evidence shows that aspects of personality are associated with participation in physical activity. We hypothesized that, among adolescents, behavioral activation (BAS) and behavioral inhibition (BIS) systems would be associated with physical fitness (cardiovascular fitness and percent body fat), enjoyment of exercise, tolerance of and persistence in high-intensity exercise, and affective response to an acute exercise bout. ⋯ These findings suggest that both the drive to avoid punishing stimuli (BIS) and the drive to approach rewarding stimuli (BAS) are related to the affective response to exercise. The BIS may be more strongly associated with fitness-related exercise behavior among adolescents than the BAS, whereas the BAS may play a relatively greater role in terms of subjective exercise enjoyment.

End-tidal CO2 pressure and cardiac performance during exercise in heart failure.
In patients with heart failure (HF), end-tidal CO2 pressure (PetCO2) is related to ventricular function at rest and has been shown to predict prognosis. However, little is known about the association between ventricular performance and PetCO2 responses to exercise. ⋯ Reduced PetCO2 reflects impairments in the functional, ventilatory, and cardiac performance response to exercise in patients with HF. PetCO2 can supplement other clinical and CPX indices in the functional and prognostic evaluation of patients with HF.

Protective gloves are worn for stick-handling sports, including ice hockey, men's lacrosse, and women's lacrosse, but are not mandated for women's field hockey. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether collegiate field hockey players are at increased risk for significant hand injuries compared with stick-handling athletes who wear protective gloves. ⋯ Of participants in four stick-handling sports, collegiate field hockey players have significantly higher odds of sustaining hand or phalangeal injuries. Wearing gloves is a protective measure common in ice hockey and men's and women's lacrosse. However, it is not the current practice in field hockey. We recommend the use of protective gloves in collegiate field hockey practice and competition.
