Alcohol drinking in one's thirties and forties is associated with body mass index in men, but not in women: A longitudinal analysis of the 1970 British Cohort Study.
Our objective was to investigate longitudinal associations between alcohol drinking and body mass index (BMI). Alcohol drinking (exposure), BMI (outcome), smoking habit, occupation, longstanding illness, and leisure time physical activity (potential confounders) were assessed at ages 30, 34, 42, and 46 in the 1970 British Birth Cohort Study. Multilevel models were used to cope with the problem of correlated observations. ⋯ In ten years, BMI was expected to increase by 4.3 kg/m2 in women who were former smokers and by 0.8 kg/m2 in women who were former smokers and who were physically active. Associations between drinking and BMI were similar after further adjustment for problematic drinking and diet. These longitudinal data suggest that drinking is associated with BMI in men and that drinking is not associated with BMI in women independent of other lifestyle risk factors.

Cost-effectiveness analysis of a school- and community-based intervention to promote a healthy lifestyle and prevent type 2 diabetes in vulnerable families across Europe: the Feel4Diabetes-study.
The Feel4Diabetes-study implemented a school- and community-based intervention to promote healthy lifestyle and prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in six European countries. The intervention included a special focus on families at increased T2DM risk. The current study evaluates the intervention's cost-effectiveness. ⋯ Results for the high-risk families were only cost-effective (with considerable uncertainty) in Greece and Spain, but not when the intervention would need to be repeated. The Feel4Diabetes-intervention is potentially cost-effective, especially in countries with a high overweight and obesity prevalence, at a limited budget impact. The incremental financial investments to reach and support high-risk families did not result in the hoped-for health benefits.

The association between state-based provisional attendance periods and adolescent middle school-entry vaccination coverage.
The rise of vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks calls for a deeper understanding of the impact of policy on school-entry vaccine compliance. Provisional attendance policies vary by state but permit under-vaccinated students a limited period to attend school while receiving their immunizations. The primary objective of this study was to clarify the relationship between annual immunization coverage and state provisional policies for a single-dose of school-entry-required adolescent vaccinations: tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap), meningococcal conjugate (MCV4), and human papillomavirus (HPV). ⋯ The effect of provisional period length categorized as 0 days (18 jurisdictions, 35.3%), 1 to 30 days (18 jurisdictions, 35.3%), 31+ days (10 jurisdictions, 19.6%), and "unclear" (5 jurisdictions with incomplete data, 9.8%) had no significant association with annual adolescent vaccination coverage for Tdap (p = 0.82), MCV4 (p = 0.08), and HPV (p = 0.76). Provisional policies may not increase vaccination coverage as anticipated. Unintended consequences, such as increased nonmedical exemptions and increased demands on clinical providers, are additional factors to consider.

U.S. adults noticing and using menu calorie information: Analysis of the National Cancer Institute's Health Information National Trends Survey Data.
FDA's Menu Labeling Final Rule requires covered establishments provide calorie information on menus or menu boards, among other requirements. This study describes correlates of noticing and using menu calorie information in a nationally representative sample of U. S. adults before implementation of the Final Rule in May 2018. ⋯ Men with, versus without, calorie knowledge were twice as likely to report noticing menu calorie information (adjusted OR 2.23 95% CI 1.51, 3.29). Findings suggest behavioral response to menu calorie information varies and most individuals who notice the information respond by ordering less in ways that could reduce caloric intake. Future analyses could compare noticing and using menu calorie information before and after menu labeling implementation to assess the effect of policy on population behaviors.

Associations between individual and environmental determinants and physical activity levels of an active population during the Spanish lockdown.
Restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic are likely to decrease physical activity (PA) levels. The purpose of the study was to explore the associations between age, gender, and exercise facilities-type membership and physical activity levels during COVID-19 lockdown among users of exercise facilities from Spain. Participants were recruited among the members of 84 exercise facilities across Spain. ⋯ Lastly, women from private facilities showed greater levels of PA (β = 63, 95%CI: 29 to 96) than low cost and public's users, an increase higher than what was found in men (β = 7, 95%CI: -38 to 52). Therefore, gender, age and the type of exercise facility's subscription had a relevant influence on PA levels during COVID-19 lockdown in an active population. These findings are useful for public health recommendations, in order to identify subpopulations of previously active people at risk of being physically inactive during and after this pandemic.
