Characterization of Bone Lesions in Myeloma Before and During Anticancer Therapy Using 18F-FDG-PET/CT and 18F-NaF-PET/CT.
The objective of this study was to characterize tumor activity and mineralization status in newly-detected multiple myeloma (MM) bone lesions using 2-18F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (18F-FDG)-PET/CT and 18F-sodium fluoride (18F-NaF)-PET/CT before and after antitumor treatment. ⋯ Based on our data, antitumor therapy in MM reduces not only tumor activity, but also the mineralization status of bone lesions. A second follow-up scan in a subset of the cohort yielded no change in mineralization status.

Adverse Effects of Preoperative Sarcopenia on Postoperative Complications of Patients With Gastric Cancer.
Sarcopenia is known to have an important influence on postoperative complications in several diseases, and on the prognosis of patients with cancer. However, whether sarcopenia is associated with complications and prognosis after gastrectomy in patients with gastric cancer remains controversial. This study evaluated the impact of the preoperative muscle mass on postoperative complications of gastric cancer surgery. ⋯ Preoperative sarcopenia was found to be an independent risk factor for postoperative infectious complications in gastric cancer patients.

Scheduled Intravenous Acetaminophen for Postoperative Management of Patients Who Had Thoracoscopic Esophagectomy for Esophageal Cancer.
The aim of this study was to assess the effects of scheduled intravenous acetaminophen for postoperative management of patients who underwent thoracoscopic esophagectomy for esophageal cancer. ⋯ Scheduled intravenous acetaminophen after thoracoscopic esophagectomy in patients with esophageal cancer was a useful strategy in reducing the incidence of postoperative pneumonia.

Predictive Factors of Pancreatic Fistula After Pancreaticoduodenectomy and External Validation of Predictive Scores.
The Fistula Risk Score (FRS), as other risk scores, is a validated model predicting the development of a clinically relevant post-operative pancreatic fistula (CR-POPF) after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). We evaluated risk factors related with CR-POPF and correlated four predictive scores with the likelihood of developing CR-POPF in our cohort. ⋯ Abdominal thickness, Wirsung's duct diameter, pancreatic consistency and histological diagnosis were independent predictive factors of CR-POPF. Predictive scores reflected the likelihood of CR-POPF, FRS being the score with the highest predictive value.

Effect of Perioperative Lidocaine and Cisplatin on Metastasis in a Murine Model of Breast Cancer Surgery.
Mortality from breast cancer is usually attributable to metastasis. In vitro data suggest that amide local anaesthetics, e.g. lidocaine, inhibit metastasis by multiple mechanisms and recent in vivo data support this. Experimental data also suggest that opioids may inhibit cisplatin chemotherapy. Whether lidocaine would influence cisplatin chemotherapy has not been evaluated. ⋯ In a 4T1 murine model of breast cancer surgery, under sevoflurane anaesthesia, lidocaine enhanced the metastasis-inhibiting action of cisplatin. Clinical evaluation of the hypothesis that co-administration of systemic lidocaine during cisplatin chemotherapy seems warranted.
