The aim of the present study was to compare the consumption and cost of ephedrine in parturients with respect to two packagings: ampoules and prefilled syringes. ⋯ The results of the present study show that the use of prefilled syringes reduces significantly the wastage of ephedrine, allowing subsequent cost minimization in obstetrical anaesthesia.

Case Reports[Severe pulmonary contusion after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy].
Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a simple and effective treatment of urinary stones. Renowned less aggressive than surgery, it knew a wide success and constitutes therefore the treatment of first intention of the majority of the kidney stones. ⋯ We report the case of a 28-year-old patient who had a pulmonary contusion following a lithotripsy for a left kidney stone and whose evolution was favourable after two weeks in intensive care unit. Through this observation and the analysis of the rare reported cases in the literature, we insist on the different varieties of pulmonary complications of the ESWL, the hypothesis explaining the mechanisms of their arising as well as the precautions to take to avoid them.

Case Reports[Survey of anaesthesia-related mortality in France: the role of aspiration of gastric contents].
Aspiration of gastric contents is a major complication in relation with the practice of anaesthesia. The present article is aimed at describing detailed data related to aspiration which were obtained during the French national survey on anaesthesia-related mortality conducted by both Sfar and CépiDC-Inserm. Information regarding methods of the survey and the main results has been previously published. ⋯ Aspiration almost always occurred during induction of anaesthesia. Analysis of practice patterns disclosed significant deviations from recommendations. French anaesthetists should voluntarily move through a personal and active process toward an improvement of their practice to reduce the incidence of aspiration.

Case Reports[A complication of epidural anaesthesia: the breaking of a catheter].
We report the breaking of an epidural catheter, which occurred during the procedure of insertion. If such a breaking is a rare event, it is due in this case to an aberrant trajectory of the catheter. By studying the literature, we also analyzed the mechanisms which can lead to the breaking of an epidural catheter. We recommend a precise radiological examination to localise the trapped catheter among the nervous structures.
