[Management of smoking in the perioperative period: survey of practices amongst anaesthetists in Lorraine].
Evidence shows that smoking leads to more perioperative complications. Smoking cessation before surgery reduces this postoperative morbidity. The French Society of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care published recommendations on this subject in 2005. We wanted to assess knowledge and practice amongst anaesthetists in Lorraine as regards the management of smoking in the perioperative period. ⋯ Despite published guidelines on the benefits of smoking cessation prior to surgery, Lorraine anaesthetists fail to systematically advise their patients in this regard. We believe there is a need to improve the management of these patients, either through the development of smoking cessation protocols locally or through patient referral to a specialised clinic.

Review[Management of penetrating abdominal trauma: what we need to know?].
Penetrating traumas are rare in France and mainly due to stabbing. Knives are less lethal than firearms. The initial clinical assessment is the cornerstone of hospital care. ⋯ Mortality remains high, initially due to bleeding complications and secondarily to infectious complications. Early and appropriate surgery can reduce morbidity and mortality. Non-operative strategy is only possible in selected patients in trained trauma centers and with intensive supervision by experienced staff.

Case Reports[Cardiovascular adverse effects due to phenylephrine eye drops in ophtalmic surgery].
Adverse systemic reactions such as cardiovascular effects may occur following topical ocular application of phenylephrine. We report the case of a 49-year-old woman who, following topical application of phenylephrine eyedrops, experienced hypertension with electrocardiographic modifications and a rise in cardiac troponin Ic.
