ReviewPotential effects of SARS-CoV-2 on the gastrointestinal tract and liver.
COVID-19 is a pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Early reported symptoms include fever, cough, and respiratory symptoms. There were few reports of digestive symptoms. ⋯ Whether theoretically or clinically, many studies have suggested a close connection between COVID-19 and the digestive system. In this review, we summarize the digestive symptoms reported in existing research, discuss the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on the gastrointestinal tract and liver, and determine the possible mechanisms and aetiology, such as cytokine storm. In-depth exploration of the relationship between COVID-19 and the digestive system is urgently needed.

Comparative StudyRepurposing FDA approved drugs inhibiting mitochondrial function for targeting glioma-stem like cells.
Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) tumors contain a small population of glioma stem-like cells (GSCs) among the various differentiated GBM cells (d-GCs). GSCs drive tumor recurrence, and resistance to Temozolomide (TMZ), the standard of care (SoC) for GBM chemotherapy. In order to investigate a potential link between GSC specific mitochondria function and SoC resistance, two patient-derived GSC lines were evaluated for differences in their mitochondrial metabolism. ⋯ The SoC GBM therapeutic TMZ did not trigger cytotoxicity in glioma stem cells, even at 100 μM concentration. By contrast, trifluoperazine, mitoxantrone, and pyrvinium pamoate exerted antiproliferative effects in GSCs about 30-50 fold more effectively than temozolomide. Thus, we hereby demonstrate that FDA-approved mitochondrial inhibitors induce GSC-selective cytotoxicity, and targeting mitochondrial function could present a potential therapeutic option for GBM treatment.

Comparative StudyThe effects of Bushen Yiqi Huoxue prescription and its disassembled prescriptions on a diabetic retinopathy model in Sprague Dawley rats.
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most serious complications in the late stages of diabetes, with a complex mechanism. As a complication affecting local lesions, few studies have compared differences of cytokine expression in the serum and retina. Owing to the specific value of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to complex diseases, TCM research has recently boomed in the prevention and treatment of diabetes. Bushen Yiqi Huoxue (BYH) prescription is a Chinese herbal compound that has been independently developed by our research group and has been proved to have a positive effect on DR; however, its specific mechanism and compatibility rule remain to be further explored. ⋯ BYH compound and its disassembled prescriptions could improve the DR model rats induced with streptozotocin + high-fat and high-sugar diet, respectively, by inhibiting chronic blood glucose, AGEs, or inflammation response. The expression level and location of each factor are different, confirming that the effect of TCM prescriptions is not the simple addition of each single drug or its chemical components, but the rationality of its internal compatibility combination. Further, ICAM-1 and VEGF have exactly different expression levels, suggesting more attention to be paid by other researchers or doctors in future studies.

Protective effects of dioscin on vascular remodeling in pulmonary arterial hypertension via adjusting GRB2/ERK/PI3K-AKT signal.
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive and lethal cardiopulmonary. Pulmonary vascular remodeling (PVR) caused by excessive proliferation and apoptosis resistance of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) is the chief pathological feature of PAH. Dioscin is a natural product that possesses multiple pharmacological activities, but its effect on PAH remains unclear. ⋯ Subsequently, dioscin reduced the expressions of Ras, Cyclin D1, CDK4, c-Fos, PCNA and p-ERK to inhibit proliferation and migration of PASMCs, inhibited p-PI3K and p-AKT levels and increased Bax/Bcl2 ratio to promote cell apoptosis. GRB2 siRNA transfection in PASMCs further confirmed that the inhibitory action of dioscin in PAH was evoked by adjusting GRB2/ERK/PI3K-AKT signal. Taken together, our study indicated that dioscin attenuates PAH through adjusting GRB2/ERK/PI3K-AKT signal to inhibit PASMCs proliferation and migration, and promote apoptosis, and dioscin may be developed as a therapeutic strategy for treating PAH in the future.

ReviewAnticancer activities of TCM and their active components against tumor metastasis.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has the characteristics of multiple targets, slight side effects and good therapeutic effects. Good anti-tumor effects are shown by Traditional Chinese Medicine prescription, Chinese patent medicine, single Traditional Chinese Medicine and Traditional Chinese medicine monomer compound. Clinically, TCM prolonged the survival time of patients and improved the life quality of patients, due to less side effects. ⋯ Finally, the purpose of tumor metastasis is achieved. By inhibiting autophagy and apoptosis of tumor cells, angiogenesis and EMT outside the tumor can inhibit the invasion and migration of cancer, and consequently achieve the purpose of inhibiting tumor metastasis. This review explores the research achievements of Traditional Chinese Medicine on breast cancer, lung cancer, hepatic carcinoma, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer and other cancer metastasis in the past five years, summarizes the development direction of TCM on cancer metastasis research in the past five years and makes a prospect for the future.
