Weekly chemotherapy with cisplatin and paclitaxel and concurrent radiation therapy as preoperative treatment in locally advanced esophageal cancer: a phase II study.
We evaluated the association of a weekly cisplatin (35 mg/mq) and paclitaxel (45 mg/mq) regimen with radiotherapy (46 Gy) as primary treatment in locally advanced esophageal cancer (LAEC). The main end point was the activity in terms of pathologic complete response (pathCR) rate. Thirty-three LAEC patients received chemoradiation therapy during weeks 1-6 followed by esophagectomy. ⋯ The EUS maximal transverse cross sectional area reduction >50% significantly correlated with pathCR. Three-year survival rate was 35%. These results support the activity and mild toxicity of this regimen.

Comparative StudyAssessment of breast cancer-related arm lymphedema--comparison of physical measurement methods and self-report.
To determine the relationship between physical methods of measuring lymphedema and self-reported swelling, their reliability, and standard error of measurement. ⋯ Lymphedema assessment methods are concordant and reliable but not interchangeable.

Cutaneous human papillomavirus in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas.
To evaluate the prevalence and meaning of cutaneous human papillomavirus (HPV) types in HNSCC 51 patients were analyzed for the prevalence of cutaneous as well as mucosal HPV. HPV DNA was demonstrated in 18 (35%) of 51 tumors. The majority of these HPV types belong to so-called cutaneous HPV types, whereas only HPV 6 and HPV 16 were from the mucosal HPV types. A possible role for cutaneous HPV types as co-factors in the oncogenesis of HNSCC remains to be elucidated and may be relevant for future strategies of cancer prevention.

Quercetin inhibit human SW480 colon cancer growth in association with inhibition of cyclin D1 and survivin expression through Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway.
The Wnt signaling pathway plays a pivotal role in cellular developmental processes and human carcinogenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of quercetin on the growth of the colon carcinoma cell line and the regulation effect of quercetin on the Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway. ⋯ The results indicate that the molecular mechanism underlying the antitumor effect of quercetin in SW480 colon cancer cells is related to the inhibition of expression of cyclin D(1) and survivin as well as the Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway. Therefore, the Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway could be qualified as one of the promising targets for innovative treatment strategies of colorectal cancer.

ReviewHeparins attenuate cancer metastasis: are selectins the link?
Heparin is often used to prevent or treat thromboembolism in cancer patients. Clinical and experimental evidence suggest that heparin also has anticancer activities. ⋯ Heparin inhibits selectin-mediated interactions of tumor cells with leukocytes, platelets, and endothelial cells, which are likely to mediate the initial steps of hematogenous metastasis. Prospective clinical trials can be designed on the basis of the insights obtained from experimental studies.
