The basic ingredients that made early home care a cornerstone in American healthcare are still the foundations for home health/visiting nurse/public health in the 1990s. Once overshadowed by the centralization of patient care in the hospital, home care has stepped into the place of cooperative healthcare with the hospital. This article highlights that cooperation and those basic ingredients.

Today we have the necessary cancer pain-relieving agents. These medications can safely be administered orally and in the patient's home. ⋯ As nurses in home healthcare, we can impact the statement that 25% of all cancer patients die without pain relief. It is our mission to integrate all that is known about pain management into a holistic practice that will provide the patient with the opportunity for a dignified and comfortable transition from this life.
