The effects of smoking cessation counseling by midwives on Dutch pregnant women and their partners.
Smoking during pregnancy is an important problem in the Netherlands. We tested the effectiveness of a health counseling method by midwives using a RCT. ⋯ The program realized short-term effects. An important precondition is that midwives need a proper training.

To determine if there was an improvement in nurses' communication skills 5 months after a multiple component intervention to implement the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario best practice guideline 'Establishing Therapeutic Relationships'. ⋯ A combination of strategies that support the implementation of a best practice guideline is described. Results indicate some improvement in communication skills that are essential to the establishment of therapeutic nurse-client relationships.

To address the need for interventions to enhance parent-provider communication, the present study evaluated the effectiveness of a brief intervention to enhance interpersonal communication skills by pediatric and internal medicine/pediatric residents with parents of children seen in ambulatory practice. ⋯ Training residents to increase their use of praise, empathy, and collaboration with families can be done within a brief intervention and may be associated with increased parental satisfaction with care.

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders in child and adolescent psychiatry. ADHD children are at risk for academic and psychological difficulties. Lack of cooperation between schools, parents and therapeutic institutions inhibits a multimodal treatment program. This study surveys teachers' knowledge and attitudes towards attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. ⋯ Health and/or Educational Ministry should promote a special course on ADHD for teachers and education should be part of the curriculum in faculty training. Providing these educational programs on television and radio may be highly effective as they were the most common source of information.

The objectives of this study were to identify nutrition communication styles of Dutch GPs, their strategies regarding nutrition communication and nutrition information seeking behaviours. Another aim is to provide a hypothetical model for nutrition communication style, including psycho-social and socio-demographic variables. ⋯ We advise to raise self-efficacy of GPs regarding nutrition communication and to build good collaboration with dieticians.
