Observational Study
Patterns in clinicians' responses to patient emotion in cancer care.
To investigate how patient, clinician and relationship characteristics may predict how oncologists and nurses respond to patients' emotional expressions. ⋯ Knowledge on which factors influence responses to cues and concerns may be useful in communication skills training.

Randomized Controlled Trial
The effect of communication skills training on residents' physiological arousal in a breaking bad news simulated task.
Breaking bad news (BBN) is a complex task which involves dealing cognitively with different relevant dimensions and a challenging task which involves dealing with intense emotional contents. No study however has yet assessed in a randomized controlled trial design the effect of a communication skills training on residents' physiological arousal during a BBN task. ⋯ Residents should be informed that, to perform a task, they need to engage in the task with a physiological arousal proportional to the complexity of this task. Communication skills training should be adapted.

Previous research has examined physicians' ability to respond to or identify the type of emotion cues. Yet in physician-patient interactions, identification and response are preceded by the ability to detect whether an emotion cue has occurred. This research assesses consequences of emotion detection errors for patient satisfaction. ⋯ Results suggest it may be better for physicians to incorrectly identify than miss an emotion. Training for healthcare providers should consider incorporating emotion detection.

Obtaining in-depth information from both patient and physician perspectives about what happens after a request for euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide (EAS) is refused. ⋯ Follow up appointments after refusal could give patients the opportunity to discuss their feelings and physicians to support them.

Stepwise description of the development of a post-graduate communication skills training programme for medical specialists focused on patients with medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS) to improve specialist interaction with MUPS patients. ⋯ If the RCT demonstrates sufficient effectiveness and efficiency of the MUPS focused communication skills training programme for medical specialists the intervention could be embedded in post-graduate education of medical specialists and residents.
