An Empirical Examination of the Role of Common Factors of Therapy during a Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy Intervention for Headache Pain.
It is often assumed that psychosocial pain treatments work because of specific active components of the intervention. The degree to which common factors may contribute to improved pain outcomes is not well researched. The purpose of this study was to examine patient-related and therapist-related common factors during a Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) for headache pain trial. ⋯ Common factors play an important role in improving pain outcomes and patient satisfaction during a MBCT for headache pain intervention. Stimulating positive pretreatment expectations and patient motivation, as well as building strong rapport is an important component of treatment success.

Study the influence of concomitant arthroscopic procedures and rotator cuff tear (RCT) severity on daily pain intensity and disability after shoulder arthroscopy. ⋯ This study introduces a novel means for estimating concurrent procedures for use as a prognostic factor. Our findings are similar to previous research of RCT severity that was found to have limited influence on postoperative outcomes. In contrast, this study highlights the potential importance of accounting for concomitant arthroscopic procedures as a predictor of early postoperative pain intensity outcomes.

Prior work on postoperative pain trajectories has examined pain score changes over time using daily averages of pain scores. However, little is known about the time required until patients consistently report minimal postoperative pain. ⋯ Although additional analyses are necessary, SuPPR may represent a novel method for evaluating acute pain service performance.

Minalcipran has been approved for the treatment of fibromyalgia in several countries including Australia. Australian agency considered that the overall efficacy is moderate, although clinically significant, and could be translated into a real and strong improvement in some patients. The determination of the characteristics of patients who could benefit the most from milnacipran (MLN) is the primary objective of this manuscript. ⋯ Clustering and predictive data-mining methods provide additional insight about fibromyalgia, its symptoms, and treatment. The information is useful to physicians to optimize prescriptions in the daily practice and to regulatory bodies to refine indications.

Mental defeat has been implicated in precipitating suicide with effects not explained by depression. It has also been found to be elevated in people who are most distressed and disabled by chronic pain. This study examined the role of mental defeat in predicting suicide intent among chronic pain patients and compared the predictive value of mental defeat with other established pain and psychological constructs. ⋯ Mental defeat may be a key indicator for heightened suicide risk. Therapeutic interventions targeting mental defeat offer a novel avenue for reducing suicide risk in chronic pain patients.
